<strong>University</strong> Computing and<br />
Communications<br />
<strong>University</strong> Computing and Communications (UCC) is a comprehensive<br />
Information Technology service organization providing support for<br />
Academic Computing, Administrative Computing, Instructional Media,<br />
Servers and Networks, User Training and Support, and Telephony.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong> operates a complex array <strong>of</strong> multivendor<br />
UNIX and Windows servers connected to thousands <strong>of</strong> workstations<br />
over a high speed local and metropolitan area network. The<br />
following is a brief description <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s major computing<br />
services and systems managed by UCC:<br />
ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS. UNO’s HR, Student, and Financial<br />
systems from PeopleS<strong>of</strong>t run on an array <strong>of</strong> Windows 2000 servers.<br />
PeopleS<strong>of</strong>t systems may be accessed via the campus network, and the<br />
Web.<br />
NETWORK SYSTEMS. The campus network consists <strong>of</strong> a multigigabit<br />
Ethernet-based backbone network interconnecting all main<br />
campus buildings and remote campus sites to provide data communications<br />
to meet campus academic and administrative needs. The<br />
network provides support for over 5000 wired and wireless clients,<br />
modem access, access to Internet1, and to the advanced research networks,<br />
Internet2 and the National LambdaRail.<br />
TELEPHONE SERVICES. The UCC provides for enterprise-wide telephone<br />
services supporting local, long-distance, and specialized communications<br />
needs for the campus.<br />
MESSAGING AND EMAIL. All enrolled students, faculty, and staff<br />
are provided mailboxes on our collaborative mail system. This system<br />
provides calendaring, mail, and other features through a rich Web<br />
interface as well as providing connections for Outlook email clients<br />
and legacy mail clients using POP, SMTP, and IMAP. The UNO messaging<br />
system also supports ActiveSync providing mail and calendaring<br />
services to cell phones and PDAs. The system provides automated distribution<br />
lists that are used to provide news and alerts. In addition,<br />
UNO uses an <strong>of</strong>f campus notification system that can provide emergency<br />
alerts to students cell phones and PDAs in case <strong>of</strong> a campus<br />
emergency.<br />
HELP DESK AND DESKTOP SUPPORT. UCC operates Help Desk and<br />
Desktop Support units that provide hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware support<br />
services for the UNO community. These units provide the <strong>University</strong><br />
with a helpful, single point <strong>of</strong> service for peripherals, desktop s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
and hardware, and UNO’s main computing systems including<br />
Windows, Macintosh, PeopleS<strong>of</strong>t, WebSTAR, Micros<strong>of</strong>t Office, SAS, SPSS,<br />
Mathematica, Matlab, PPP, email, SharePoint, Blackboard, anti-virus,<br />
and computing account support. The Help Desk may be reached by<br />
telephone at 280-HELP (280-4357), via e-mail at helpdesk@uno.edu, or<br />
in person in room 1O1R <strong>of</strong> the Computer Center.<br />
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. UNO uses Blackboard to create<br />
Web-assisted learning materials. Blackboard allows instructors to<br />
augment in-class instruction by providing course materials, handouts,<br />
and multimedia presentations from an easy-to-use interface.<br />
Additionally, Blackboard has features that accelerate asynchronous<br />
class discussions, chat groups, collaboration, and student and faculty<br />
interaction.<br />
MULTI-MEDIA SERVICES. Instructional Media provides services<br />
and support for AV and classroom presentation systems as well as<br />
media production services for telecourses and distance education.<br />
FACULTY AND STAFF TRAINING. <strong>University</strong> Computing and Communications<br />
maintains a resource center dedicated to meeting the<br />
technology needs <strong>of</strong> the UNO Faculty and Staff. The FSRC <strong>of</strong>fers 17 PC<br />
computers with CD/DVD burners, 2 iMac computers, a scanner, 1 Black<br />
and White Laser printer and 1 Color Inkjet printer.<br />
ACCOUNTS. All students, faculty, and staff receive accounts for<br />
access to computers and the following computing systems: Email, Local<br />
Area Network (LAN), Blackboard (UNO’s E-Learning Management System),<br />
WebSTAR, and dial-up Internet access (PPP). All accounts (except<br />
for PPP) share the same user id and password.<br />
ON-LINE LEARNING SYSTEM. UNO uses Blackboard for its Learning<br />
Management System. Blackboard provides Web-based features that<br />
accelerate asynchronous and synchronous class discussions and interactions<br />
including tools for course outlines, assignments, documentation,<br />
testing, chat groups, collaboration, and messaging. Blackboard<br />
courses are created for all courses <strong>of</strong>fered each semester<br />
STUDENT COMPUTING LABS. The UNO technology fee provides<br />
students with a rich variety <strong>of</strong> computer labs for learning. Two types<br />
<strong>of</strong> facilities exist. Student Open Labs are general use facilities that are<br />
available to any enrolled UNO student on a drop-in first-come, firstserve<br />
basis. Departmental Labs are restricted facilities dedicated for<br />
use by students enrolled in specific classes.<br />
TRAINING WORKSHOPS. UCC <strong>of</strong>fers free training to UNO faculty<br />
and staff in the areas <strong>of</strong> PeopleS<strong>of</strong>t, SharePoint, Blackboard, and Micros<strong>of</strong>t<br />
applications. Training workshops are available every semester.<br />
STATISTICAL COMPUTING. As a Carnegie Research <strong>University</strong>,<br />
UNO is committed to the process <strong>of</strong> discovery. To assist graduate students<br />
and researchers with quantitative analysis, UNO supports SAS<br />
and SPSS for statistical computing. The university has a site license for<br />
these packages, and they are available in all student open labs managed<br />
by <strong>University</strong> Computing and Communications.<br />
MATHEMATICAL COMPUTING. To assist students and researchers,<br />
UNO licenses Mathematica and MATLAB. Mathematica integrates<br />
mathematical computing, visualization, and a powerful language to<br />
provide a flexible environment for technical computing. MATLAB is<br />
the tool <strong>of</strong> choice for scientific research in physics and engineering<br />
analysis and modeling, from simple calculator operations to largescale<br />
programming and interactive document preparation. MATLAB<br />
and Mathematica are available on all student open labs managed by<br />
<strong>University</strong> Computing and Communications.<br />
MEDIA RESOURCES provides the campus with media equipment<br />
for classroom instruction, staff presentations, and campus functions<br />
as well as housing a video and film library for instructional use. Student,<br />
faculty, and staff identification cards are produced throughout<br />
the year.<br />
MEDIA PRODUCTIONS provides a television production studio/<br />
electronic classroom for faculty and staff use. Services include instructional<br />
television production, distance learning telecourses, computer<br />
graphics generation, studio/field-based recording, audio production,<br />
<strong>of</strong>f-line editing, and multimedia presentations.<br />
UNIVERSITY TESTING SERVICES provides computerized scoring<br />
and item analysis <strong>of</strong> objective tests. Tests submitted are returned with<br />
a computerized report. The Service also scores standardized commercial<br />
tests and computerized questionnaires and research data.<br />
UNO Women’s Center<br />
The UNO Women’s Center was created in 1985 to serve the diverse<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> the women in the university and to affirm the lives <strong>of</strong><br />
women at the university and in the communities <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>.<br />
Located in room 201 <strong>of</strong> the Earl K. Long Library, the center serves<br />
as a referral base and support source for campus and community<br />
women. The center <strong>of</strong>fers scholarships, book awards, and a range <strong>of</strong><br />
programming throughout the year, including workshops on preventing<br />
violence against women, educational speakers, and discussion/<br />
support groups. The Women’s Center also houses a 900 book library,<br />
and computer cluster, and it maintains a broad base <strong>of</strong> periodicals and<br />
miscellaneous print materials that pertain to women. Students, staff,<br />
and faculty are welcome to drop by the center, which is normally<br />
open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information on programming,<br />
