pursue add-on certification in a second area once initial certification<br />

is awarded. All programs <strong>of</strong> study include the coursework required<br />

for add-on certification in special education mild/moderate disabilities.<br />

Candidates who complete a student teaching experience that also<br />

focused on the needs <strong>of</strong> learners with mild/moderate disabilities are<br />

eligible for add-on certification in special education.<br />

Secondary (Grades 6 - 12) certification are as <strong>of</strong>fered include:<br />

Any <strong>of</strong> the certification areas listed above can be selected as a<br />

secondary focus area. The length <strong>of</strong> the program <strong>of</strong> study will vary<br />

according to the combination <strong>of</strong> primary and secondary focus areas<br />

selected. Candidates should consult with a College <strong>of</strong> Education and<br />

Human Development Academic Counselor or refer to the college web<br />

site at http://www.ed.uno.edu/ for detailed information regarding<br />

each program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree in<br />

Elementary-Secondary Education<br />

Curricula in this category are designed for students preparing to<br />

teach in specified areas, grades K-12. The curricula in secondary education<br />

have three major components: I. General Education; II. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Education; III. Academic Specialization.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> not less than 128 semester hours is required for<br />

graduation.<br />

1. Candidates wishing to be admitted into the program must present<br />

a prepared audition demonstrating their potential for the successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the required classes and the required public<br />

recital.<br />

2. The major instrument will normally be selected from strings,<br />

brass, woodwinds, or percussion. A keyboard instrument may be<br />

selected provided that the candidate can play a band or orchestra<br />

instrument well enough to perform with one <strong>of</strong> the instrumental<br />

ensembles for the required number <strong>of</strong> semesters. The student<br />

must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 14 hours (7 semesters) <strong>of</strong> applied<br />

instruction and present a half recital (Music 3950).<br />

3. As a requirement for graduation, candidates will be required to<br />

satisfy the faculty that they have reached an acceptable level <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence on the major instrument in both sightreading<br />

and prepared performance. This evaluation will be based<br />

on active participation in the recital hour, ensembles, and performance<br />

before a faculty jury each semester that they are enrolled<br />

in private instruction.<br />

4. All Instrumental Music Education majors must enroll in and fulfill<br />

the requirements for Music 1900 (Recital Hour) and Music 1909<br />

(Music Education Forum) each semester that they are a full-time<br />

student, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the student teaching semester.<br />

5. All candidates must meet the following requirements in addition<br />

to those listed above:<br />

a. Musicianship through Music 2104 or equivalent as determined<br />

by placement examination<br />

b. A minimum level <strong>of</strong> keyboard pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is required for successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the program. Candidates must pass a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

examination. Candidates may elect to take Class Piano<br />

(Music 1407 and 1408) or applied lessons to prepare for the<br />

examination.<br />

c. A minimum <strong>of</strong> seven credits in performing groups is required<br />

for graduation. Full-time candidates must enroll in one performing<br />

group (Music 1902 or 1908) each semester, excluding<br />

the student teaching semester, even though the seven hour<br />

requirement may have been fulfilled. Any student, whether<br />

part-time or full-time, who is enrolled in Applied Music Courses<br />

must enroll in a performing group.<br />

6. Refer to “Admission to a Teacher Education Program” for<br />

requirements necessary for admission to the Teacher Education<br />

Program.<br />
