SPAN 2001 Intermediate Spanish I<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 1002 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Continuation <strong>of</strong><br />

the development <strong>of</strong> all four language skills: speaking, understanding,<br />

writing, and reading. The course includes the presentation and<br />

discussion <strong>of</strong> cultural material such as magazines, films, records,<br />

and other audio-visual items when feasible.<br />

SPAN 2002 Intermediate Spanish II<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 2001 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Readings and<br />

exercises in Spanish. Special emphasis on comprehension as well as<br />

oral and written expression in the language.<br />

SPAN 2003 Basic Spanish for Hispanic Stu<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Reading, writing, and vocabulary-building<br />

exercises especially prepared for the student whose<br />

home language is Spanish.<br />

SPAN 2004 Inter Spanish for Hispanic Stu<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: Spanish 2003 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Reading, writing,<br />

and vocabulary-building exercises especially prepared for the<br />

student whose home language is Spanish.<br />

SPAN 3002 Phonetics<br />

3 cr.<br />

Phonetic principles applied specifically to an analysis <strong>of</strong> the phonetic<br />

system <strong>of</strong> Spanish. Intensive practice in the language laboratory,<br />

ear training, transcriptions, and corrective exercises.<br />

SPAN 3005 Romance Linguistics<br />

3 cr.<br />

(SPAN 3005 and FREN 3005 are cross-listed) Comparative study <strong>of</strong><br />

the history, phonology, morphology, and syntax <strong>of</strong> the principal<br />

Romance languages.<br />

SPAN 3031 Spanish Conversation<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 2002 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Conversation,<br />

oral discussions, interpretations and reports, practicing the spoken<br />

language. Not open to native speakers <strong>of</strong> Spanish. Native speakers<br />

majoring in Spanish must substitute three hours at the 3000 level<br />

or above.<br />

SPAN 3041 Advanced Spanish Grammar<br />

3 cr.<br />

Fall semester. Intensive study <strong>of</strong> Spanish grammar and syntax. This<br />

course is designed primarily for prospective teachers and students<br />

concentrating in the language.<br />

SPAN 3042 Advanced Spanish Comp & Syntax<br />

3 cr.<br />

Spring semester. Prerequisite: SPAN 3041. Drill in original descriptive<br />

and narrative composition in the language with attention to style,<br />

syntax, idioms, and verb forms.<br />

SPAN 3055 Analysis & Interpret Span Lit<br />

3 cr.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong> literary analysis particular to each <strong>of</strong><br />

the major genres with readings and discussion <strong>of</strong> representative<br />

works.<br />

SPAN 3100 Survey Spanish Literature I<br />

3 cr.<br />

Fall semester. A study <strong>of</strong> Spanish literature from its beginnings to<br />

the eighteenth century. Classes conducted in English. Additional<br />

work done in connection with this course may be used by Spanish<br />

majors to fulfill the Liberal Arts oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement.<br />

SPAN 3101 Survey Spanish Literature II<br />

3 cr.<br />

Spring semester. Continuation <strong>of</strong> SPAN 3100. Study <strong>of</strong> the main<br />

authors and literary movements from the eighteenth century to<br />

the present. Classes conducted in English. Additional work done<br />

in connection with this course may be used by Spanish majors to<br />

fulfill the Liberal Arts oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement.<br />

SPAN 3191 Independent Work<br />

1 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Readings, conferences, and<br />

papers under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the faculty. The course<br />

allows the student to correlate and supplement the work covered<br />

in the departmental courses. Each course may be repeated but combined<br />

credit may not exceed six semester hours.<br />

SPAN 3192 Independent Work<br />

1 cr.<br />

the undergraduate curriculum for an internship project or projects.<br />

Students receiving three credits will work a minimum <strong>of</strong> eight<br />

hours per week; two credits, six hours per week; one credit, three<br />

hours per week.<br />

SPAN 3197 Oral Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

1 cr.<br />

The course is to be taken concurrently with SPAN 3055, 3100, or 3101.<br />

The student will be required to present a detailed “explication de<br />

texte” to the pr<strong>of</strong>essor teaching the course and conduct a discussion<br />

with the pr<strong>of</strong>essor related to the chosen text and receive a pass/<br />

fail grade. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> this course satisfies the general<br />

degree requirement for oral competency.<br />

SPAN 3199 Indep Work Honors Students<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department and Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

Honors Program. Directed research culminating in a written thesis<br />

to meet the requirements for graduation with Honors in Spanish,<br />

and if appropriate, <strong>University</strong> Honors.<br />

SPAN 3271 Spanish-American Civilization<br />

3 cr.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> Spanish-American civilization: history, social, organization,<br />

and culture. Open to all students with a reading knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

Spanish equivalent to completion <strong>of</strong> SPAN 2002 or 2012. Discussions<br />

in English.<br />

SPAN 3402 Spanish-American Lit in Trans<br />

3 cr.<br />

(Open to all students, including Spanish and Spanish Education<br />

majors, for degree credit as an elective.) Different Spanish or<br />
