Sociology 2707 also satisfies oral competency requirements. Sociology<br />
2707 and 2708 also satisfy computer literacy requirements.<br />

The <br />
nine hours in foreign language must be in the same language.<br />
Alternatively, students may opt to take 12 hours in two foreign languages<br />
(six hours in each <strong>of</strong> two languages). If the 12-hour option is<br />
chosen, reduce approved electives by three hours; the remaining 31<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> approved electives must then include three hours <strong>of</strong> 2000+<br />
humanities.<br />
Students majoring in sociology must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30<br />
hours in sociology, including 1051, 2707, 2708, and 4086 (and excluding<br />
Sociology 1000). At least nine hours must be completed from among<br />
the following courses: Sociology 4094, 4101, 4107, 4124, 4161, 4216, and<br />
4219.<br />
Minor in Sociology<br />
Students must complete the following requirements for a minor in<br />
sociology:<br />
1. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 credit hours in sociology with a 2.0 grade point<br />
average.<br />
2. Sociology 1051 or equivalent.<br />
3. Sociology 2708 or equivalent. Political Science 2900 or Psychology<br />
2300 will substitute for this requirement but will not reduce the<br />
required number <strong>of</strong> credit hours in sociology.<br />
4. A minimum <strong>of</strong> nine credit hours in sociology courses numbered<br />
3000 or higher.<br />
Honors in Sociology<br />
Students wishing to graduate with Honors in Sociology must:<br />
1. Fulfill all requirements for the major in sociology.<br />
2. Maintain a cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 in sociology<br />
courses and 3.25 overall.<br />
3. Complete a senior honors thesis which includes earning six hours<br />
<strong>of</strong> credit for Sociology 3099.<br />
American Humanics Certification Program<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> Sociology administers the American Humanics<br />
Certification Program which is open to any undergraduate major<br />
or baccalaureate degree holder. The American Humanics Certification<br />
Program prepares students for careers with youth and human service<br />
organizations. Program participants must join the American Humanics<br />
Student Organization and complete the following courses required for<br />
certification.<br />

4192 (Practicum in Not-For-Pr<strong>of</strong>it Organizations) is a one<br />
credit course that must be repeated for at least three hours <strong>of</strong> credit.<br />
This course is cross-listed with LSU-Shreveport (SOCL 392) and may<br />
be taken for UNO credit via the compressed video system.<br />

All <br />
program participants must attend the American Humanics Training<br />
Institute for at least one four-day session at their own expense<br />
(estimated cost $800) for which they will earn one credit <strong>of</strong> independent<br />
study (Sociology 3091).<br />
4<br />
American <br />
Humanics interns must work in a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it setting. American<br />
Humanics internships require at least a 2.5 overall GPA, or at<br />
least a 2.75 GPA in the student’s last 30 hours.<br />
Students interested in the American Humanics Certification Program<br />
register through the undergraduate coordinator in the Sociology<br />
Department.<br />
