2. Candidates will be required to satisfy the faculty that they have<br />
reached an acceptable level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence in both<br />
sight-reading and prepared performance. This evaluation will be<br />
based on active participation in the recital hour, ensembles, and<br />
performances before a faculty jury each semester that they are<br />
enrolled in private instruction.<br />
3. All Instrumental Music Education majors must enroll in and fulfill<br />
the requirements for Music 1900 (Recital Hour) and Music 1909<br />
(Music Education Forum) each semester that they are a full-time<br />
student, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the student teaching semester.<br />
4. The applied major for this curriculum will be either voice or<br />
piano. The candidate must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 14 hours (7<br />
semesters) <strong>of</strong> applied instruction and present a half recital (Music<br />
3950). Voice majors must demonstrate a minimum pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in<br />
piano by passing a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examination. Students may elect<br />
to take Class Piano (Music 1407 and 1408) or applied lessons to<br />
prepare for the examination. Piano majors must demonstrate a<br />
minimum pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in voice by passing a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examination.<br />
Candidates may elect to take applied lessons to prepare for<br />
the examination.<br />
5. All candidates must meet the following requirements in addition<br />
to those listed above:<br />
a. Musicianship through Music 2104 or equivalent as determined<br />
by placement examination<br />
b. A minimum <strong>of</strong> seven credits in performing groups is required<br />
for graduation. Full-time students must enroll in one performing<br />
group (Music 1904, 1905, 1906, or 1950) each semester,<br />
excluding the student teaching semester, even though the<br />
seven-hour requirement may have been fulfilled. Any student,<br />
whether part-time or full-time, who is enrolled in Applied<br />
Music Courses must enroll in a performing group.<br />
6. Refer to “Admission to a Teacher Education Program” for<br />
requirements necessary for admission to the Teacher Education<br />
Program.<br />
Transition to Teaching (Alternate) Certification Options<br />
Two options for obtaining teacher certification are <strong>of</strong>fered at the<br />
graduate level. The Non-Master’s Alternate certification program is<br />
designed to provide all <strong>of</strong> the coursework and experiences necessary<br />
to obtain Louisiana certification without pursuing an academic degree.<br />
The second Transition to Teaching option is the Practitioner Program,<br />
a program designed to assist new teachers in gaining certification on<br />
a “fast track” schedule. Admission to this program is restricted as candidates<br />
are selected by the employing school district.<br />
The Practitioner program is only <strong>of</strong>fered in high-need certification<br />
areas including; secondary mathematics, secondary science, and<br />
special education – mild/moderate disabilities.<br />
Non-Degree Certification Only Teacher Certification<br />
Option (Alternate Certification Program)<br />
Certification Areas Offered<br />
Certification areas include: Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 3, Grades 1-5,<br />
Grades 4-8, and Grades 6-12 in a specific content area, Special Education<br />
- Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Special Education – significant<br />
disabilities and Special Education – Early Intervention. Secondary content<br />
areas include: English, mathematics, social studies, and science<br />
(Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science). This program <strong>of</strong> study assists<br />
candidates in applying content and skills within school settings while<br />
completing coursework. Candidates concurrently enroll in an internship<br />
each fall and spring semester during the entire course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
The pace <strong>of</strong> the program ranges from one to three years, depending<br />
on the number <strong>of</strong> credit hours taken. Additional Non-Master’s Alternate<br />
certification programs are <strong>of</strong>fered in the following areas: special<br />
education (early intervention, significant disabilities).<br />
Program Admission<br />
Admission to this program requires an overall grade point average<br />
<strong>of</strong> 2.5 and passage <strong>of</strong> PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II, Content Area. PRAXIS<br />
I is not required for candidates who already have a Masters degree.<br />
All candidates must submit <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts from each college and<br />
university attended. One transcript with all transfer credits is not<br />
acceptable. This is a requirement for all candidates pursuing initial<br />
certification. All initial advising for this program occurs via the College<br />
<strong>of</strong> Education and Human Development Academic Counselors. Following<br />
initial advising, candidates are advised by a Faculty Advisor<br />
for the duration <strong>of</strong> their program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
Program <strong>of</strong> Study<br />
The program <strong>of</strong> study varies according to the certification area<br />
desired, the academic and experience background <strong>of</strong> the candidate,<br />
and the performance <strong>of</strong> the candidate in the program. Details on the<br />
program <strong>of</strong> study for each certification option may be found at the<br />

Field Experience Requirements<br />
Throughout the program, candidates complete field activities in<br />
school and classroom settings. Field work is supported through enrollment<br />
in 6 credit hours <strong>of</strong> an internship, taken in a specific sequence.<br />

Requirements for Completing Program<br />
All certification programs in the College <strong>of</strong> Education and Human<br />
Development are performance-based. Candidates develop a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
portfolio to document their ability to demonstrate knowledge, skills,<br />
and dispositions associated with effective teaching. Completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
program <strong>of</strong> study requires successful performance in both coursework<br />
and applied field activities. Candidates must pass specific requirements<br />
to move from Level 1 <strong>of</strong> the program to Level 2. Additional assessments<br />
must be taken and passed to move from Level 2 to the capstone Internship<br />
(Level 3). Candidates must pass a final assessment to complete the<br />
program and be recommended for teaching certificate. More information<br />

Louisiana Teacher Certification<br />
Candidates who successfully complete all program requirements<br />
are recommended to the Louisiana Department <strong>of</strong> Education for teaching<br />
certificate. All conditions listed above under “Louisiana Teacher<br />
Certification” must be satisfied. Candidates enrolled in this program<br />
while teaching may be eligible for a Provisional Teaching Certificate<br />
upon recommendation by the hiring school district.<br />
Continuation <strong>of</strong> Program <strong>of</strong> Study to Receive a Masters Degree<br />
Dependent on performance, candidates may apply up to 12 credit<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> the coursework completed for certification toward a Masters<br />
<strong>of</strong> Education degree. Additional information on this option may be<br />

Practitioner Certification Option<br />
Program Admission<br />
Enrollment in the Practitioner Certification program is restricted to<br />
candidates jointly selected by university and school district personnel.<br />
Candidates must have an agreement for employment by a participating<br />
school district for the subsequent school year. Admission takes<br />
place in the spring via a formal application process. Admission to this<br />
program requires an overall grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 and passage <strong>of</strong><br />
PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II, Content Area. PRAXIS I is not required for<br />
candidates who already have a Masters degree. All candidates must<br />
submit <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts from each college and university attended.<br />
