EDHS 4998G Practicum Health Promotion<br />

1-6 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: junior standing or higher completion <strong>of</strong> a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 50 percent <strong>of</strong> the required EDHS/EDHP undergraduate courses<br />

and/or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Supervised experiences in health<br />

promotion. This course may be repeated but total credit may not<br />

exceed six semester hours. Section number will correspond with<br />

credit to be earned. Graduate students cannot receive more than<br />

nine hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credit from the combined courses <strong>of</strong> EDHS<br />

4998 and 6990, or EDHP 4998 and/or 6990.<br />

EDHS 6110 Grad Foundatn Health Promotion<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDHP 6170 and EDFR 6700 or EDFR 6705 or consent <strong>of</strong><br />

department. Background and theory for health promotion in the<br />

four major areas <strong>of</strong> practice, evolving pr<strong>of</strong>essional roles, and ethics<br />

will be presented. The course will cover the seven areas <strong>of</strong> responsibility<br />

and relevant competencies for Certified Health Education<br />

Specialist preparation.<br />

EDHS 6201 Health Promo Risk Reduction<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDHP 6170 and EDFR 6700 or EDFR 6705 or the consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> department. This seminar will provide an opportunity for<br />

students to learn about health promotion by evaluating the current<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional literature in health education and health promotion.<br />

The basics <strong>of</strong> scientific investigation, scientific writing, risk<br />

appraisal, intervention strategies, and behavior change on an individual,<br />

group, and community level will be explored.<br />

EDHS 6801 Sexuality & Aging<br />

3 cr.<br />

Focus on sexuality and the process <strong>of</strong> aging in contemporary<br />

culture.<br />

EDHS 6803 Nutrition & Aging<br />

3 cr.<br />

The focus <strong>of</strong> the course is on the nutritional need <strong>of</strong> the aging. It<br />

includes methods on how best to meet the dietary and nutritional<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the growing older population.<br />

EDHS 6990 Ind Study Health Promotion<br />

1-3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing in the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Human Performance and Health Promotion and consent <strong>of</strong> major<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Investigation <strong>of</strong> pertinent health-related problems under<br />

the direction <strong>of</strong> a graduate faculty member. Student must have<br />

completed EDHP 6170 or equivalent and EDFR 6700 or EDFR 6705<br />

or equivalent.. This course may be repeated but total credit for all<br />

independent study (Health-Safety and Health Promotion) may not<br />

exceed six semester hours toward a Master’s degree in the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Human Performance and Health Promotion. Section number<br />

will correspond with credit to be earned<br />

EDHS 6998 Internship Health Promotion<br />

1-6 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. Provides a supervised experience<br />

in one <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essional domains <strong>of</strong> health promotion. Examples<br />

<strong>of</strong> intern settings include: university student health services,<br />

health/community agencies, corporate worksites, and schools.<br />

EDHS 7000 Thesis Research<br />

1-6 cr.<br />

May be repeated for credit until thesis is accepted. Section number<br />

will correspond with credit to be earned.<br />

EDHS 7040 Examination or Thesis Only<br />

0 cr.<br />

Open to students in a thesis program who have only (other than<br />

application for degree) the final typing and acceptance by the<br />

Graduate School <strong>of</strong> their thesis or dissertation or to students in<br />

a non-thesis program who have only (other than application for<br />

degree) to pass the final examination to complete graduation<br />

requirements.<br />

(ENGL 4240 and EDLS 4200 are cross listed A survey <strong>of</strong> books and<br />

materials appropriate for use with the adolescent reader. Emphasis<br />

will be placed on selection and discussion <strong>of</strong> books for today’s<br />

teenagers.This course can be used to satisfy general degree requirements<br />

in literature for upper elementary education students only.<br />

<strong>of</strong> criteria for assessing books useful in promoting cognitive<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> high-ability children, and selection and utilization <strong>of</strong><br />

literature with this population.<br />

EDLS 6650 Teaching Information Literacy<br />

(EDLS 6650 and EDCI 6720 are cross-listed) Prerequisite: EDFR 1000,<br />

CSCI 1000, or equivalent course; or permission <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Investigation <strong>of</strong> teaching strategies and instructional materials to<br />

implement the Louisiana Content Standards for information literacy<br />

in elementary and secondary schools, including the principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> critical thinking and problem-based learning. Designed to<br />

provide teachers <strong>of</strong> language arts, social studies, and sciences, and<br />

library media specialists with an understanding <strong>of</strong> the role and<br />
