EES 7000 Thesis Research<br />

Offered each semester. By arrangement with the graduate adviser.<br />
Three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory work per credit hour. Section number<br />
will correspond with credit to be earned. To be repeated for credit<br />
until thesis is accepted.<br />

No credit. Open to students in a thesis program who have only<br />
(other than application for degree) the final typing and acceptance<br />

ENAS 7025 Eng & Appl Sci Research Sem<br />
1 cr.<br />
Students and faculty will present and discuss research activities<br />
and/or current topics in the field. Invited guest speakers will also<br />
participate. May be <strong>of</strong>fered jointly by two or more departments in<br />
the engineering and applied science doctoral program or by any<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the participating departments in the College <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />
and the College <strong>of</strong> Sciences. May not be applied for credit toward<br />
the Ph.D. program.<br />

Civil Engineering<br />
ENCE 2301 CE Computing & Graphics<br />
4 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: MATH 1126 and credit or registration in ENCE 2310.<br />
Introduction to Fortran programming and spreadsheet design for<br />
civil engineering applications. Fundamental graphical concepts and<br />
related material as they apply to the technologies utilized in the<br />
field <strong>of</strong> civil engineering. Two one-hour lectures and two threehour<br />
labs.<br />
ENCE 2310 Elem Surveying Measurements<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: MATH 1126 and credit or registration in ENCE 2301.<br />
Practical surveying measurement techniques are presented with<br />
suitable <strong>of</strong>fice computation methods for boundary, construction,<br />
and topographic surveys. State coordinate systems are introduced<br />
with proper use <strong>of</strong> geodetic datums (NAD 1927 to NAD 1983). Two<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />
ENCE 2311 Mechanics <strong>of</strong> Materials Lab<br />
1 cr.<br />
Offered each semester. Prerequisite: credit or registration in ENCE<br />
2351. Selected experiments in mechanics <strong>of</strong> materials: mechanical<br />
extensometers, electric strain gauges, photoelasticity, stress concentration,<br />
surface hardness. Three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />
ENCE 2312 Advanced Surveying<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: ENCE 2310 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Elementary vertical<br />
and horizontal control surveying with least-squares adjustment<br />
and analysis. Practical geodetic transformations are used as well as<br />
instrument adjustments and calibration. Two hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and<br />
three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />
ENCE 2350 Statics<br />
3 cr.<br />
Offered each semester. Prerequisites: MATH 2108 or 2111 and PHYS<br />
1061; credit or registration in ENCE 2301 or CSCI 1201. Vectors; twodimensional<br />
and three-dimensional force systems; equilibrium;<br />
friction; centroids; mass moments <strong>of</strong> inertia; second moments <strong>of</strong><br />
areas.<br />
ENCE 2351 Mechanics <strong>of</strong> Materials<br />
3 cr.<br />
Offered each semester. Prerequisite: ENCE 2350. Simple stress and<br />
strain; shear, moments, stresses and deflections in beams; combined<br />
stresses; thermal stresses; statically indeterminate members;<br />
columns.<br />
ENCE 2355 Engineering Mechanics<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: CSCI 1201, MATH 2108 or 2111, and PHYS 1061. Vectors;<br />
equilibrium <strong>of</strong> force systems; friction; centroids; moment <strong>of</strong><br />
inertia; kinematics and kinetics; work and energy; impulse and<br />
momentum.<br />
ENCE 3093 Spec Prob in Civil Engineering<br />
1 cr.<br />
Prerequisite: senior standing in engineering. Seminar, independent<br />

ENCE 3300 Computational Methods in CE<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: Credit or registration in MATH 2221 or consent <strong>of</strong><br />
department. Samples and populations, measures <strong>of</strong> the distribution<br />
<strong>of</strong> data, normal or Gaussian and other distributions, regression<br />
and correlation, hypothesis testing, modeling, computers and error<br />
analysis; interpolation, numerical differentiation and integration;<br />
and function approximation and data fitting for problems in civil<br />
and environmental engineering.<br />
ENCE 3318 Principles <strong>of</strong> Hydraulics<br />
3 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: ENME 2750 and PHYS 1062. An introductory course<br />
to the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> hydraulics and environmental water<br />
resources engineering. Fluid properties, conservative equations,<br />
flow resistance in pipes and open channels, dimensional analysis,<br />
pipe flow and pipe measurements.<br />
ENCE 3323 Intro to Environmental Engr<br />
4 cr.<br />
Prerequisites: CHEM 1018 credit or registration in ENCE 3318 or credit<br />
or registration in both ENME 3720 and ENME 3716. Topics include:<br />
water quality, water and wastewater treatment processes, air pollution<br />
control, and solid and hazardous waste management. Laboratory<br />
provides hands-on analytical experience with various pollution<br />
parameters. Three hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and three hours <strong>of</strong> lab.<br />
ENCE 3340 Geotechnical Engineering<br />
3 cr.<br />
Fall semester. Prerequisites: ESS 1001, ENCE 2351 and 3318 or ENME<br />
3720; credit or registration in ENCE 3300 and ENCE 3341. Properties<br />
and behavior <strong>of</strong> soils as engineering materials; the origin and<br />
classification <strong>of</strong> soils; permeability <strong>of</strong> soils; compressibility and<br />
strength characteristics <strong>of</strong> soils; elementary treatment <strong>of</strong> consolidation,<br />
earth pressure, and bearing capacity. Determination <strong>of</strong> engineering<br />
properties <strong>of</strong> soils in the laboratory. Two hours <strong>of</strong> lecture<br />
and three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory.<br />
