EDSP 6210 Intr People with Autism<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> how the diagnosis <strong>of</strong> autism is established a<br />

review <strong>of</strong> current research and a consideration <strong>of</strong> the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> people with autism in schools and in the community.<br />

EDSP 6420 Educational Audiology<br />

3 cr.<br />

The application <strong>of</strong> current audiological technology and techniques<br />

to deaf education and speech therapy for the deaf. A basic course<br />

in audiology for teachers in all areas <strong>of</strong> Special Education, but particularly<br />

for those in deaf education, assessment, and supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> Special Education.<br />

EDSP 6440 Lang Dev & Instr Strat Deaf<br />

3 cr.<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> language development focusing on linguistic principles<br />

in language acquisition <strong>of</strong> hearing and <strong>of</strong> deaf and hard <strong>of</strong> hearing<br />

children. Linguistic structural attributes <strong>of</strong> English and American<br />

Sign Language will be presented as well as a review <strong>of</strong> current<br />

strategies <strong>of</strong> language assessment and instruction for deaf and<br />

hard <strong>of</strong> hearing students.<br />

No prerequisites. The courses in the area <strong>of</strong> Deaf Education can be<br />

taken independently <strong>of</strong> one another.<br />

Theories <strong>of</strong> early childhood development and related instructional<br />

methodologies for hearing impaired infants and toddlers and their<br />

parents.<br />

3 cr.<br />

Utilization <strong>of</strong> curricular and language theories and principles <strong>of</strong><br />

deaf education to create or choose a practical sequence <strong>of</strong> learning<br />

activities for deaf and hard <strong>of</strong> hearing students. Includes methods<br />

<strong>of</strong> teaching basic subjects to deaf students.<br />

EDSP 6510 Social Emotional Needs Gifted<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDSP 4510 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Defines the distinctive<br />

emotional needs <strong>of</strong> the gifted and presents strategies that<br />

educators can use to help the gifted meet those needs at school<br />

and at home.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 4510 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Curricular methods,<br />

materials, and resources for teaching the gifted and talented.<br />

(EDLS 6545 and EDSP 6545 are cross-listed) An exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

research relating to reading behavior <strong>of</strong> gifted youngsters, examination<br />

<strong>of</strong> criteria for assessing books useful in promoting cognitive<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> high-ability children, and selection and utilization <strong>of</strong><br />

literature with this population.<br />

<strong>of</strong> assessment techniques educational procedures and intervention<br />

strategies appropriate for early childhood programs serving<br />

children who are disabled.<br />

Typical and atypical language development and appropriate prevention<br />

and intervention procedures for children during the first<br />

five years <strong>of</strong> development.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 4550 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A study <strong>of</strong> typical<br />

and atypical development during the first three years <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

Examination <strong>of</strong> preventive and ameliorative strategies for infants<br />

who have known or suspected disabilities and their families.<br />

EDSP 6610 Adv Meth Lrn/Behav Problems<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 4601 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Explores the<br />

theory and research underlying the various approaches used in<br />

teaching students with mild moderate handicaps.<br />

EDSP 6620 Adv Meth Bas Sub to Mild/Mod<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 6610 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Advanced study<br />

and application <strong>of</strong> recommended practices related to teaching<br />

language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to students<br />

with mild/moderate disabilities.<br />

EDSP 6625 Adv Trans Plan Stu with Disab<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 6040 or both EDSP 6610 and 6620 or consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the department. An analysis <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> a special education<br />

teacher in planning, instructing, and implementing a program for<br />

students with disabilities which supports the transition from school<br />

to adult roles including work. 1996 - 1998 Catalog Prerequisite: EDSP<br />

4000 or EDSP 4010 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 6620 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. An in-depth<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the selection, use, analysis, adaptation and development <strong>of</strong><br />

instructional materials and curricula. Emphasis will also be placed<br />

on research and trends in materials and curricula development.<br />

clinical application <strong>of</strong> psychoeducational assessment procedures.<br />

appropriate educational programs and planning for individuals<br />

with exceptionalities.<br />

Process and content considerations <strong>of</strong> consultation and collaboration<br />

used in the teaming approach. Applications <strong>of</strong> such methodologies<br />

will be to the inclusive settings (school work and community)<br />

in the delivery <strong>of</strong> services to individuals with exceptionalities.<br />

Prerequisites: EDSP 4775 and 6780 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Precision<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> and programming for individuals with exceptionalities;<br />

administration <strong>of</strong> informal and selected formal evaluation<br />

instruments; and interpretation and application <strong>of</strong> results to<br />

instructional programming for individuals in a variety <strong>of</strong> settings.<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDSP 4800 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. The utilization,<br />

development, and evaluation <strong>of</strong> methods and materials for<br />

persons with visual impairments and the study <strong>of</strong> the organization<br />

<strong>of</strong> program components and priorities for individuals with visual<br />

impairments.<br />

EDSP 6850 Adv Ed Procedure Visual Impair<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDSP 4800, 4820, 4830, or consent <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> advanced educational strategies utilized in teaching<br />

students with visual impairments. Examination <strong>of</strong> procedures for<br />

teaching braille reading, the Nemeth braille code for mathematics<br />

and science, and the use <strong>of</strong> electronic devices for reading and<br />

orientation and mobility.<br />
