focuses on developments in painting, sculpture, and architecture in<br />
late medieval Italy, with a special emphasis on the Tuscan cities <strong>of</strong><br />
Florence, Siena, and Pisa. Attention will be given to issues <strong>of</strong> style,<br />
regional schools, and typology, to individual artists and artworks<br />
and to the examination <strong>of</strong> the central themes raised in the literature<br />
concerning this period (for example, the proto-Renaissance, a<br />
“Black-Death” style).<br />

painting and sculpture in Europe and the United States from the<br />
1880s to 1920. Attention will be given to major styles and movements<br />
(including Symbolism, Neo-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism,<br />
Expressionism, and Dada) to individual artists and artworks, and to<br />
the development <strong>of</strong> the concepts <strong>of</strong> revolutionary modernism and<br />
the avant-garde, <strong>of</strong> the primitive in art, and <strong>of</strong> abstraction.<br />
