Minor in Cartography, Remote Sensing, and GIS: Geography 2801,<br />

Honors in Geography<br />

An honors program is available for qualified students who wish to<br />

earn a bachelor’s degree With Honors in Geography. The requirements<br />

for graduating With Honors in Geography include:<br />

1. A cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> at least 3.5 in geography, and<br />

a minimum overall grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.25.<br />

2. Completion <strong>of</strong> a Senior Honors Thesis which involves earning six<br />

hours in Geography 3895. Enrollment in Geography 3895 must be<br />

approved by the director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Honors Program. The<br />

honors thesis is to be defended orally before a committee composed<br />

<strong>of</strong> the thesis director, another member <strong>of</strong> the geography<br />

faculty appointed by the chairman, and a representative <strong>of</strong> the<br />

honors program.<br />

This course satisfies the liberal arts oral competency requirement.<br />

The <br />

nine hours <strong>of</strong> foreign language must be in the same language.<br />

Alternately, students may opt to take 12 hours in two foreign languages<br />

(six hours in each <strong>of</strong> two languages.) If the 12-hour option is<br />

chosen, students may reduce approved electives by three hours; the<br />

remaining 19 hours <strong>of</strong> approved electives must then include three<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> 2000+ humanities.<br />

Must include three hours outside <strong>of</strong> History.<br />

Students majoring in history must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 39<br />

hours in history. The following courses are required: History 1001, 1002,<br />

2501, 2502, and 3001. In addition, students must complete a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 12 hours <strong>of</strong> 3000- or 4000-level history electives and 12 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

additional history electives, any level.<br />

At least nine hours <strong>of</strong> history electives must be in a chosen concentration:<br />

U.S., European, or Non-Western. (The latter includes Africa, Asia,<br />

the Middle East, and Latin America). Each student’s history electives<br />

also must include at least 3 hours <strong>of</strong> Non-Western and 3 hours from<br />

outside the student’s chosen field <strong>of</strong> concentration. Students choosing<br />

to major in history should consult with a departmental advisor to<br />

plan their program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Advanced courses in foreign language are recommended for students<br />

anticipating graduate study.<br />

Minor in History<br />

To achieve a minor in history the student must complete 18 hours<br />

credit in history with a 2.0 average. At least six hours must be in<br />

courses numbered 3000 or above. Students should consult with a history<br />

advisor in planning a minor.<br />

Honors in History<br />

History majors who wish to graduate with honors must meet the<br />

following requirements:<br />

1. a cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> at least 3.5 in all history<br />

courses taken, and an overall grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.25<br />

2. Successful completion, with an oral defense, <strong>of</strong> a Senior Honors<br />

thesis, which includes earning six hours <strong>of</strong> credit for History 3999<br />

(Senior Honors Thesis). No more than three hours <strong>of</strong> credit in History<br />

3999 may be included in the minimum 36 hours <strong>of</strong> history<br />

required for the major.<br />

Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the above requirements will carry the<br />

designation With Honors in History on the student’s diploma.<br />

CURRICULUM IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts <strong>of</strong>fers a degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

in International Studies (BAIS) administered through the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong><br />

the dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts by the director <strong>of</strong> International<br />

Studies. The degree’s multi-disciplinary curriculum draws upon<br />

courses in anthropology, economics, English, fine arts, geography, history,<br />

philosophy, political science, sociology, and foreign languages.<br />

Courses from these disciplines and an internship with a government<br />

agency, a non-governmental international agency, or an international<br />

corporation comprise the core requirements <strong>of</strong> the program. Students<br />

in this program complete a 24 credit hour concentration in any one <strong>of</strong><br />

the college’s four area studies (Africana Studies, Asian Studies, European<br />

Studies, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies) or in any <strong>of</strong><br />

the four topical themes (Diplomacy and International Organizations;<br />

Environmental Issues and Policy; Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration;<br />

and Peace & Justice Studies). Other topical themes may be developed<br />

by individual students in consultation with faculty advisors and<br />

the director <strong>of</strong> International Studies.<br />
