EDCI 6750 Instructional Systems<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> department. An examination <strong>of</strong> the systems<br />

approach in the analysis and development <strong>of</strong> instructional<br />

procedures.<br />

EDCI 6754 Curriculum Dev Micro Computer<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDCI 6600, EDFR 6750 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. This<br />

course will relate curricular design processes to the development <strong>of</strong><br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware. Knowledge about learning theories, motivation, instructional<br />

methodologies, curricular designs, etc. will be applied in the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> instructional computing materials. Students will<br />

gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> how s<strong>of</strong>tware can be made into courseware<br />

and into a part <strong>of</strong> a total curriculum.<br />

EDCI 6755 Cont Applicat Instr Strategies<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 4850 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Over-view <strong>of</strong><br />

instructional strategies as pertains to content areas and research<br />

on the effective teaching <strong>of</strong> content. Emphasis on lesson design<br />

implementation and assessment <strong>of</strong> content instruction and classroom<br />

management practices.<br />

EDCI 6758 College Teaching<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDCI 6758 AND EDAD 6640 are cross listed) This course provides<br />

an overview <strong>of</strong> the issues principles and practices associated with<br />

effective college teaching. Topics examined include learning and<br />

diversity; teaching models and strategies teacher and student<br />

behaviors and learning outcomes; and instructional improvement<br />

strategies. The interaction <strong>of</strong> theory and practice is an important<br />

theme <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

EDCI 6759 College Student Learning<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDCI 6759 and EDAD 6645 are cross-listed) This course examines<br />

recent advances in research and theory related to behavioral,<br />

humanistic, information-processing, developmental, motivational,<br />

social, cognitive, epistemological, developmental, multicultural,<br />

constructivist, and other contemporary perspectives on how college<br />

students learn. Research and theory in these areas will be studied<br />

in ways that emphasize concrete implications for teaching practices,<br />

curriculum development, and student services in the design<br />

<strong>of</strong> effective learning environments for students in traditional twoyear<br />

and four-year classrooms as well as in other nontraditional<br />

postsecondary contexts.<br />

EDCI 6793 Grad Spec Topics Curr & Instr<br />

3 cr.<br />

The content <strong>of</strong> the course will be varied form semester to semester.<br />

This course may be repeated but total credit may not exceed six<br />

semester hours in any degree program.<br />

EDCI 6860 Teach Devel & Pr<strong>of</strong> Leadership<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 6755 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. Survey if the<br />

literature on teacher development and teacher leadership. Special<br />

emphasis will be placed on the development <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills<br />

and collaborative processes necessary for mentoring teachers in<br />

various stages <strong>of</strong> teacher development. Such skills and processes<br />

help implement curriculum and acquire expertise in teaching<br />

content.<br />

EDCI 6900 Intro Doctoral Readings C&I<br />

3 cr.<br />

Fall Semester. Prerequisite: Screening into the doctoral program.<br />

Readings on major theories and ideologies <strong>of</strong> curriculum and<br />

instruction. This course must be taken before the Qualifying<br />

Examination. Required <strong>of</strong> all doctoral students in Curriculum and<br />

Instruction.<br />

EDCI 6902 Topical Doc Reading Curriculum<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the doctoral program; EDCI 6600; EDCI<br />

6900; and EDCI 6610 or EDCI 6620 or EDCI 6310; or by consent <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department. Reading, lectures, and discussion concerning a current<br />

curriculum issue. Intensive study <strong>of</strong> relevant theoretical issues as<br />

well as broader spectrum <strong>of</strong> educational concerns. Required <strong>of</strong> all<br />

doctoral students in General Curriculum. Topics will vary with<br />

each <strong>of</strong>fering.<br />

EDCI 6904 Top Doc Readgs Ins/Tch Develop<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: Screening into the doctoral program; EDCI 6900; and<br />

EDCI 6755 or EDCI 6860; or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. Intensive<br />

work on one instructional theorist, theory or approach to teacher<br />

development. Topics will vary with each <strong>of</strong>fering. Required <strong>of</strong> all<br />

doctoral students in Teacher Development<br />

EDCI 6905 Research Critique Curr & Instr<br />

3 cr.<br />

Fall Semester. Prerequisite: Passage <strong>of</strong> the Doctoral Qualifying Examination;<br />

EDFR 6710 6711 and 6715; or consent <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Detailed analysis <strong>of</strong> criticism <strong>of</strong> recently published research studies<br />

in curriculum and instruction. Topics will vary with each <strong>of</strong>fering.<br />

EDCI 6910 Directed Group Doctoral Study<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: Passage <strong>of</strong> the doctoral Qualifying Examination, completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> all research tools, courses, or consent <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Directed practice in developing research in curriculum and instruction.<br />

EDCI 6920 Doctoral Res Seminar Engl Educ<br />

Offered every other year. Prerequisite: Passage <strong>of</strong> the Doctoral Qualifying<br />

Examination or by consent <strong>of</strong> the department. An analysis<br />

and critique <strong>of</strong> current research in English Education, this course<br />

is designed to help doctoral students interested in English Education<br />

develop deep knowledge <strong>of</strong> educational research literature and<br />

theory in the areas <strong>of</strong> literature, language and composition teaching.<br />

Topics will vary with each <strong>of</strong>fering.<br />

Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing with consent <strong>of</strong> department<br />

and major pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Investigation <strong>of</strong> pertinent problems<br />

under the direction <strong>of</strong> a graduate faculty member. This course may<br />

be repeated but total credit may not exceed six semester hours. Section<br />

number will correspond with credit to be earned.<br />

Offered every Fall. Prerequisite: completions <strong>of</strong> the Qualifying<br />

Examination in Curriculum and Instruction; EDFR 6710 EDFR 6715<br />

and an advanced research tools course; and EDCI 6900, EDCI 6902,<br />

EDCI 6904 and EDCI 6905 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. Discussion<br />

<strong>of</strong> critical issues in writing and conduction dissertation research in<br />
