EDCI 6490 Sem in Reading-Language Arts<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 6436 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Explorations in<br />

recent trends and problems in specific areas <strong>of</strong> research and practice<br />

in reading and language arts. The topic will vary with the<br />

instructor. May be taken for graduate credit more than once.<br />

EDCI 6492 Sem Literacy Studies & Lang Ed<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: successful completion <strong>of</strong> the doctoral qualifying<br />

examination EDFR6700, EDFR 6710, EDFR 6715 and one <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

EDCI 6436, EDCI 6460 or EDCI 6490. Critical analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

research on selected topics in literacy studies and language education.<br />

Topics will vary. May be taken twice for credit. Required <strong>of</strong> all<br />

doctoral students in Literacy Studies and Language Education.<br />

EDCI 6493 Practicum Diagnostic Remed Rdg<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 6436. A course designed for the practice <strong>of</strong> diagnosing<br />

and remediating reading disability.<br />

EDCI 6495 Practicum Clinical Reading<br />

3 cr.<br />

Summer session only. Prerequisites: EDCI 6434, 6436 and 6438 or<br />

consent <strong>of</strong> department. A course designed for the reading specialist<br />

to develop the skills in treating severe reading problems with<br />

emphasis on individual and small groups.<br />

EDCI 6510 Adv Curr Design Erly Chldhood<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 4595 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. An analysis and<br />

application <strong>of</strong> techniques, planning and evaluative procedures in<br />

developing curricula for the preschool and kindergarten<br />

EDCI 6520 Contem Approach Early Chldhood<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 4595 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A critical analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> the conceptual framework and implementation <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

programs in Early Childhood Education and their influences<br />

in preschool and kindergarten education.<br />

EDCI 6525 Involvement in Ed Young Child<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 4595 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. The planning,<br />

selection, and utilization <strong>of</strong> human resources, activities, materials,<br />

and facilities relating to the education <strong>of</strong> the young child.<br />

EDCI 6530 Survey Measurment Erly Chldhd<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDCI 4595 and EDFR 6700 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. A<br />

survey <strong>of</strong> instruments which measure the young child’s growth in<br />

the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor domains.<br />

EDCI 6540 Stdy Prog Early Childhood Educ<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDCI 6510 and 6520 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. This<br />

course will examine the evolution <strong>of</strong> the early childhood pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

including historical events, people and trends form past to<br />

present. Students will explore the impact <strong>of</strong> current early childhood<br />

program such as state and federally supported preschools,<br />

parochial preschools, employer-supported child care, and the day<br />

care industry, through observation and extensive readings.<br />

EDCI 6550 Effectve Parenting Child Behav<br />

3 cr.<br />

Analysis <strong>of</strong> the nature and process <strong>of</strong> parent-child interaction<br />

through the child-rearing years <strong>of</strong> infancy and childhood.<br />

EDCI 6560 Play Dev & Learng Young Child<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDCI 4500 or consent <strong>of</strong> the department. The study<br />

<strong>of</strong> the role play in the development and learning <strong>of</strong> young children.<br />

Subtopics include the meaning <strong>of</strong> play in diverse cultures, the<br />

research basis for including play in the early childhood curriculum,<br />

techniques for the facilitation <strong>of</strong> play activities in early childhood<br />

programs, and strategies helpful in the advocacy for play among<br />

colleagues, administrators, and curriculum designers.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the critical issues in the elementary school curriculum<br />

and <strong>of</strong> desirable instructional practices in the major areas <strong>of</strong><br />

instruction.<br />

EDCI 6620 Secondary School Curriculum<br />

3 cr.<br />

The study and critical evaluation <strong>of</strong> various designs <strong>of</strong> the curriculum<br />

as they apply to general and specialized education, including<br />

content and subject matter areas. There is particular emphasis on<br />

course development.<br />

EDCI 6658 College Curriculum<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDCI 6658 and EDAD 6650 are cross listed) This course provides<br />

an over-view <strong>of</strong> the issues, principles, and practices associated with<br />

college curriculum development. Topics include the diversity <strong>of</strong><br />

philosophical foundations for college curricula; perspectives and<br />

models <strong>of</strong> the college curriculum in higher education. The interaction<br />

<strong>of</strong> theory and practice is an important theme <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

EDCI 6660 Nature & Devlp Soc Studies Edu<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> social studies education and an<br />

investigation into the purpose <strong>of</strong> social studies as it relates to citizenship<br />

education in American schools.<br />

EDCI 6670 Evaluation <strong>of</strong> Curriculum Prog<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisites: EDCI 6600 or 6610 or 6620 or consent <strong>of</strong> department<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> gathering information and making decisions<br />

with respect to the development and modification <strong>of</strong> curriculum<br />

programs.<br />

EDCI 6675 Advanced Educ Prog Evaluation<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDFR 6675 and EDCI 6675 are cross-listed) Prerequisites EDCI 6670<br />

and EDFR 6710 and 6711 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. This course<br />

is designed to provide students with the research and evaluation<br />

skills required to implement various program evaluation models. It<br />

is also intended to provide the skills necessary for effectively using<br />

the standards <strong>of</strong> the National Joint Committee on Standards for<br />

Program Evaluation as required by state certification guidelines.<br />

EDCI 6710 Nonfiction Across Curriculum<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDCI 6710 and EDLS 6710 are cross-listed) A critical examination<br />

<strong>of</strong> nonfiction books used in schools. Focus is on standards for<br />

evaluation and curricular uses for informational and biographical<br />

works.<br />

EDCI 6720 Teaching Information Literacy<br />

3 cr.<br />

(EDLS 6650 and EDCI 6720 are cross-listed) Prerequisite: EDFR 1000,<br />

CSCI 1000, or equivalent course; or permission <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Investigation <strong>of</strong> teaching strategies and instructional materials to<br />

implement the Louisiana Content Standards for information literacy<br />

in elementary and secondary schools, including the principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> critical thinking and problem-based learning. Designed to<br />

provide teachers <strong>of</strong> language arts, social studies, and sciences, and<br />

library media specialists with an understanding <strong>of</strong> the role and<br />

uses <strong>of</strong> information in the contemporary world.<br />

EDCI 6744 Inter Progm Basic for Curr Dev<br />

3 cr.<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 4744 or EDFR 6750 or consent <strong>of</strong> department. Students<br />

will study intermediate programming techniques in Logo and<br />

basic while developing courseware for classroom use. Additionally,<br />

they will learn to modify and, when necessary, expand existing<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware for improved educational applications.<br />
