ART, DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL PARTICIPATION<br />

accepted at a Norwegian doctoral programme. Several doctoral candidates<br />

are expected to fulfil their theses at AHO by 2011; Karen Brænne (Volda<br />

University College – HiVolda) studies the philosophies of art and design<br />

education <strong>in</strong> teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Morten Lerpold (Telemark University College<br />

– HiT) <strong>in</strong>vestigates art <strong>in</strong> public space. Ingvild Digranes (Oslo University<br />

College – HiO) discusses conflict<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests when representatives <strong>for</strong> the<br />

“art-world” enter the school arena. Laila Bel<strong>in</strong>da Fauske (HiO) analyses why<br />

and how architecture has been given a position <strong>in</strong> the national curricula.<br />

Morteza Amari (HiT) studies how In<strong>for</strong>mation and Computer Technology<br />

(ICT) can be used <strong>in</strong> both creat<strong>in</strong>g images and <strong>in</strong> distance education. Sissel<br />

Bro (HiT) is <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the relations between body, space and movement<br />

<strong>in</strong> creative processes. Eva Lutnæs (HiO) is <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the practise of evaluation<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g colleges <strong>in</strong> art and craft. F<strong>in</strong>ally, Anna<br />

Austestad (HiO) is study<strong>in</strong>g visual culture <strong>in</strong> relation to the national curriculum<br />

and Målfrid Irene Hagen (Buskerud University College) is <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the role of art, design and architecture <strong>in</strong> companies.<br />

Doctors at other universities and abroad<br />

In 2000, Hilde Lidén got her doctoral degree at the Faculty of Social Studies<br />

at the University of Oslo (UiO). She studied how children learned through<br />

cultural processes <strong>in</strong> a pluralistic environment (Lidén, 2000). Elisabeth<br />

Lønnå received her degree at the same faculty <strong>in</strong> 2002. She has studied the<br />

legacy and writ<strong>in</strong>gs of Helga Eng (Lønnå, 2002). Both Marit Holm Hopperstad<br />

and Bjørn Magne Aakre got their degree at the Faculty of <strong>Education</strong><br />

at the NTNU <strong>in</strong> Trondheim. Hopperstad f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong> 2002 with a study on<br />

children’s draw<strong>in</strong>g and mean<strong>in</strong>g mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dergarten. Her f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are<br />

discussed <strong>in</strong> a semiotic perspective (Hopperstad, 2002). Aakre has <strong>in</strong> his thesis<br />

described and analysed the background <strong>for</strong> how design has been <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

<strong>in</strong> the national curricula <strong>in</strong> the secondary education (Aakre, 2005). In 2003,<br />

Ellen Sæthre-McGuirk f<strong>in</strong>ished her thesis at the Katholieke Universiteit i<br />

Leuven, Belgium. Her topic was Susanne Langer’s aesthetic theory and its<br />

application to the works of art by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Both<br />

Arne Marius Samuelsen and Guri Østby got their degree at the Faculty of<br />

Art History at the University of Bergen (UiB). Samuelsen has studied the<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of art <strong>for</strong> children <strong>in</strong> primary school (Samuelsen, 2003). Østby<br />

has <strong>in</strong>vestigated how art can be used as a medium <strong>for</strong> general education <strong>in</strong><br />

primary school (Østby, 2006). Venke Aure is expected to f<strong>in</strong>ish her thesis at<br />

Stockholm University <strong>in</strong> 2009. In her thesis she discusses the importance of<br />

art <strong>in</strong> the lives of children and youth.<br />
