ART, DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL PARTICIPATION<br />

the M.A. studies <strong>in</strong> Oslo and Notodden were evaluated by Norgesnettrådet<br />

(2001) on the base of the analyses of M.A. theses and <strong>in</strong>terviews with both<br />

students and professors (Danbolt, Nygren-Landgärds & L<strong>in</strong>dström, 2001).<br />

<strong>The</strong> evaluation was positive, and it recommended <strong>in</strong>creased research activity<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the core field of art and design education. An evaluation on the<br />

national project, Den Kulturelle Skolesekken (DKS) (<strong>The</strong> Cultural Rucksack),<br />

was published <strong>in</strong> 2006. It reveals conflict<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests and practises when<br />

values of the “art-world” meet and cooperate with the “educational world”<br />

<strong>in</strong> primary and lower secondary schools (Borgen & Brandt, 2006).<br />

<strong>Research</strong> networks and periodicals<br />

<strong>The</strong> Network <strong>for</strong> Nordic <strong>Research</strong>ers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Visual</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Education</strong> (NetNoRVAE)<br />

has been an important <strong>in</strong>spiration <strong>for</strong> the early development of the research<br />

community <strong>in</strong> Norway. Lars L<strong>in</strong>dström has through his <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>for</strong> arrang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

workshops and sem<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>in</strong> Bräkne-Hoby (1994), Hels<strong>in</strong>ki and Copenhagen<br />

(1995), Tisvildeleie and Ronneby (1996), Vilnius (1997), Lysebu/Oslo (1998)<br />

and Iceland (1999) given valuable contributions to the build<strong>in</strong>g of the research<br />

field. Two volumes of Stockholm Library of Curriculum Studies (L<strong>in</strong>dström,<br />

1998, 2000) have been published as a result of this network and these<br />

conferences. <strong>The</strong>re is also another Nordic research network, Nordisk Forum<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>for</strong>skn<strong>in</strong>g og udvikl<strong>in</strong>gsarbejde <strong>in</strong>den <strong>for</strong> <strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g, håndarbejde og sløjd samt<br />

duodji/samesløj (NORFO) (Nordic <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> research and development with<strong>in</strong><br />

crafts <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g duodji), which arranges workshops and publishes articles –<br />

some <strong>in</strong> the F<strong>in</strong>nish series Techne. This network focuses more on the craft<br />

tradition and has there<strong>for</strong>e less bear<strong>in</strong>g on this chapter.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Norwegian art and design education research community has its<br />

base at the M.A. programmes <strong>in</strong> Oslo and Telemark, and at the doctoral<br />

programme at AHO. As students are l<strong>in</strong>ked to the programmes only through<br />

their educational period, the need <strong>for</strong> a broader research network has been<br />

articulated. <strong>The</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e DesignDialog was established <strong>in</strong> 2002 as a <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong><br />

researchers after f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g their doctoral studies (Nielsen, 2004). <strong>The</strong> network<br />

gathers researchers with topics related to design and design education<br />

<strong>in</strong> a broad perspective. Besides arrang<strong>in</strong>g workshops, the network has promoted<br />

More or less <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal research networks connected to specific research<br />

projects exist; here are some with <strong>in</strong>ternational cooperation. Aure participates<br />

<strong>in</strong> the project supported by the Nordisk M<strong>in</strong>isterråd (Official co-operation<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Nordic region) on dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of art <strong>in</strong> Nordic museums.<br />
