PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CHECKSPreventive maintenance checks should be done to each switch machine, regardless ofwhether a switch machine operates independently or in series with another switchmachine. Preventive maintenance checks are intended to serve as a reference for faultisolation procedures. If a problem is found, take the necessary action to correct it.When performing the procedures provided in this section, the following warnings mustbe heeded:WARNINGKEEP CLEAR OF GEARS AND SWITCH POINTS WHEN INSERTINGOR REMOVING A HAND CRANK. THE SWITCH MACHINE CAN BEREMOTELY ACTIVATED OR MAY NOT BE REMOTELY ACTIVATEDOR MAY NOT BE IN ITS FULLY LOCKED POSITION AND CAN BEACTIVATED WHEN THE CRANK IS REMOVED AFTER THE LOCK ISRESET. EITHER CONDITION MAY CAUSE EQUIPMENT DAMAGE ORPERSONNEL INJURY.WARNINGWHEN USING THE HAND CRANK ON THIS SWITCH MACHINE, KEEPA FIRM HOLD ONTO THE HAND CRANK. IF THERE IS SPRING IN THESWITCH POINTS WHEN THE MACHINE BECOMES UNLOCKED, THEHAND CRANK WILL ACCELERATE RAPIDLY IN THE DIRECTION IT ISBEING TURNED. IF NOT CAUTIOUS, INJURY BY THE CRANK’SSUDDEN MOVEMENT COULD RESULT.Whenever a switch machine is repaired or rebuilt, complete cleaning and lubricationshould be performed. These procedures are found in Section 6, CorrectiveMaintenance.4.6.1. After FloodingIf the switch machine is or was flooded, clean, dry and regrease it and make sure thatmagnetic detent is free of water. In cold weather, trapped water will freeze and preventthe switch machine from operating. The sealed motor bearings may requirereplacement.After flooding, water-resistant grease in motor bearings may have becomecontaminated or washed away. If so, the motor should be disassembled and thebearings removed, then cleaned and greased or replaced. This is also true for the maingearbearings in Models 5F and 5H switch machines.
