Thecommutator should be brown in color and highly polished.5 Remove any carbon dust from the commutator end of the armature, insidethe undercuts (3), the brush holders, (4) and the sides of the brushes (5).NOTEAlways use lint-free cloth. Never use emery cloth on thecommutator or brushes.6 Verify that the brushes (5) slide freely in the holders (4) and seat fully on thecommutator (6). Brush pressure is 1.25 to 1.75 pounds. Brushes are to bereplaced when the brush pusher lever becomes flush with the top of thebrush holder (4). Replace the brushes with the same grade brushes. (Referto Table 6–8 for replacement procedure.)7 Remove the hand crank from the clutch shaft and reset the cutout contactby moving the blocking plate to the normal position.Reinstall all covers and padlocks.Reinstall the fuses and return the machine to service.P1293, Rev.
