Switch Machine Disassembly and Assembly Procedure (Cont.)StepAction56 Main Gear Assembly For Models 5F and 5HIf the main gear and operating crank are removed and replaced accordingby following actions a through h listed in Step 23, it should not be necessaryto retime the dual control mechanism. Proceed as follows:a. Replace main gear and crank in frame. Be sure to insert crank in samealignment with respect to gear frame as it was before removal. This ensuresthat the same splines of crank and clutch sleeve are engaged with oneanother.b. With crank in place, and washers and nut replaced on the end of thecrank, place the selector lever to the POWER position and rotate the gearsuntil the crank points straight up.c. See that prick-punch mark on uppermost raised cam surface of clutchsleeve is on centerline of machine. This means that splines are properlyengaged.d. Replace gear frame assembly.e. Check alignment of parts. Check that operating crank is in the properposition for throw bar and locking bar.f. Replace and tighten screws finger tight.If the main gear and crank were removed by simply removing the nut andwashers from the top end of the operating crank and pulling the crank out,retiming of the dual control mechanism is required. If retiming is required forany reason, proceed as follows:a. Get the main gear, grease its teeth and bearing surfaces, and place thegear over crank. Insert crank and main gear through bearing on the gearframe. Position gear frame over the base frame and secure.b. Grease sleeve and crank. Position and slide sleeve over crank so that pinmarks on both the sleeve and crank are in alignment.c. Position hand throw so that it is perpendicular to the floor (mid-strokeposition). Clamp into place with a C-clamp.d. Get the clutch gear, grease teeth and bearing surfaces, and place gearover sleeve such that dog on gear engages the dog on sleeve.
