General Description1.4. MODEL 5 SERIES SWITCH MACHINE COMPONENTSThe switch machine has a DC motor at one end to drive the gear train, which moves thethrow bar and the lock rod. To ensure the throw bar and lock rod continue to moveeasily, preventive maintenance includes inspection; always replace any worn parts.Figure 1–1 shows the components of a Model 5G switch machine.Figure 1-1. Model 5G Switch Machine ComponentsOperating energy is derived from a central source, fed through external control relays, and applied to the field windings and armature of the motor. After the machine hasoperated to the called position and locked the switch, a dynamic snub arrangementstops the motor. A ceramic permanent magnetic detent restrains the motor armatureafter the dynamic snub stops armature rotation at the completion of a stroke orwhenever energy is removed from the motor.Underneath the outer cover is an inner cover over the gear train. For maintenance purposes or emergency use, a hand crank is inserted through the topcover. Table 1–2 summarizes the major common components provided on all 5 SeriesSwitch Machines.P1293, Rev. Jun/07 1–5 Alstom Signaling Inc.
