SCOPE OF MANUALThe purpose of this manual is to describe the principal features of the Alstom Model 5E,5F, 5G and 5H Electric Switch Machines and tell how to properly inspect, service andtest the switch machine, and identify both recommended spare parts and replacementparts. The illustrated catalog also includes all the parts necessary to completethe total layout.1.2. SWITCH MACHINE FEATURESThe Alstom Model 5E-5H Electric Switch Machines incorporate all of the featuresrequired to meet interlocking practices. They can be used at single switches, double-slipswitches, movable-point frogs, and derails, regardless of variations in switch fittingstandards and weights of rail. They are notably suitable for use in subways or on rapidtransit properties.5E, 5F, 5G, and 5H switch machines weigh between 900 and 1100 pounds. Models 5Eand 5F are about five feet eight inches long by eight inches high by 38 inches wide.Models 5G and 5H are one foot longer.1.2.1. Single Control Versus Dual ControlThe 5E and 5G Switch Machines operate by the internal electric motor only; they aresingle-control machines.The 5F and 5H Switch Machines are operated by a motor or by a mechanical handthrow lever; they are dual control machines.P1293, Rev.
