Friction Clutch InspectionThe following describes how to disassemble, inspect and reassemble the friction clutchonce it has been, determined to be functioning outside the requirements in “FRICTIONCLUTCH TEST.”Table 4–20. Friction Clutch InspectionStepAction1 Release setscrew on clutch housing and back off adjusting nut whilekeeping control of it. Notice spring inside clutch goes to zero force before nutis free of clutch.2 Remove shaft and nut.3 Unscrew screws on bevel gear to open clutch. Remove gear.WARNINGFRICTION DISCS IN OLDER CLUTCHES MAY CONTAINASBESTOS. FOLLOW PROPER ASBESTOS HANDINGPROCEDURES ACCORDING TO LOCAL REGULATIONS.4 Notice sequence of discs in clutch while removing discs.5 Examine friction discs for cracks, roughness or uneven wear.6 Examine metal discs for corrosion, roughness or excessive wear. Replaceany defective discs. New discs do not contain asbestos.NOTECorrosion is a potential problem because metal discs are hardchrome plated to increase resistance to wear; however, theyare susceptible to corrosion. Chrome may peel in a clutch disc,increasing resistance to slippage.7 Inspect all friction surfaces of clutch body. If roughness of surfaces noted,repair or replace clutch body.8 To reassemble clutch, clean pieces of clutch with soft cloth or bristle brush.Make sure no grease is present which does not belong.9 Apply Rust-Veto to unpainted surfaces that do not slide or rotate againstanything else.P1293, Rev.
