InstallationWARNINGDISCONNECT MOTOR ENERGY WHENEVER WORKING ON THESWITCH LAYOUT OR SWITCH MACHINE. UNEXPECTED OPERATIONOF THE MACHINE COULD CAUSE INJURY FROM OPEN GEAR,ELECTRICAL SHOCK, OR MOVING SWITCH POINTS.Keep the clearance between the number one rod and the base of the stock rail 1/4 inchmaximum (less is desirable) to prevent the switch points from moving up relative to thestock rail. It is essential if the stock rail is beveled for AREA detail 6100 (Samson)points. During use these points pry themselves away from the stock rail when movingup. This motion may cause the point-detector rod in the switch machine to moveenough to open the indication contacts. The tendency of the points to move up and incan also be reduced by keeping the ballast firmly tamped under the ties of the switchlayout. The stock rail and the switch machine must be secured to ties that are well tamped toprevent movement when the switch machine is operated against an obstruction. Morethan 3800 pounds can be exerted on the number one rod by the switch machine if theclutch is adjusted too tightly.Gauge plates, extension gauge plates, rail braces, and ties must be correct. Points mustfit snugly and uniformly against the stock rails without being bent by force from thethrow bar. Excessive throw bar force disturbs the layout and causes excessive wear tothe switch machine.P1293, Rev. Jun/07 3–2 Alstom Signaling Inc.
