Installation3.3.1. Left- or Right-Hand LayoutDifferent arrangements of single and dual control machines exist, depending on whetherleft-hand or right-hand switch machine operation is required. A typical layout of theswitch machine shown in Figure 3–1.Models 5E and 5G Switch Machines with one lock rod and one point-detector rod aresupplied for right-hand operation only. They are easily changed to left-hand operation. Also Models 5E and 5G Switch Machines with two lock rods and two point-detector rodscan be ordered for either right-hand or left-hand operation. Machines used for doubleslip switches can be changed in the field; however, machines for movable point frogapplications require different point-detector rods from those used in the existinglocation, if changing from right-hand to left-hand, or vice versa.Dual-control Models 5F and 5H Switch Machines can be ordered for either right- handor left-hand operation. Changing from right-hand to left-hand, or vice versa is notrecommended only because much more time is required to convert a dual-controlmachine than to convert a single-control machine.Instructions to change switch machine models from left-hand to right-hand layout, orvice versa, are found under heading 3.6. CHANGING FROM LEFT- TO RIGHT-HANDOPERATION AND VICE VERSA.An optional Switch Machine and Layout Sensing Kit is available from Alstom (P/N59649-218-00) that can be used to detect point pressure at each point. For a procedureon use of this kit, see Table 3–15 for the Throw Rod Point Pressure VerificationProcedure.P1293, Rev. Jun/07 3–3 Alstom Signaling Inc.
