Installation3.5.3. Temperature Considerations and Commutator CoverThe silicone-treated, moisture-repellent commutator cover keeps moisture off thecommutator. At switch locations where no frost occurs, no cover is needed.At locations where frost occurs, the cover is used only during the frost season andremoved when all danger of frost is past. Replace cover at start of next frost season.If the used cover is still in good condition, clean it thoroughly with a suitable brush or airblast after removal. The frost shield will then be clean and ready for reuse at the start ofthe next frost season. If the used frost shield is not in good condition, discard it. Put anew one around the commutator at start of the next frost season.3.5.4. Commutator Shield UseThe transparent commutator shield is furnished only in machines without a 15-wattheater in the motor compartment. It is best to keep shield in place all year and keepnuts tight that hold shield in place. To remove shield, loosen nuts and slide shieldtoward armature.3.6. CHANGING FROM LEFT- TO RIGHT-HAND OPERATION AND VICE VERSAWARNINGDISCONNECT MOTOR ENERGY WHENEVER WORKING ON THESWITCH LAYOUT OR SWITCH MACHINE. UNEXPECTED OPERATIONOF THE MACHINE COULD CAUSE INJURY FROM OPEN GEAR,ELECTRICAL SHOCK, OR MOVING SWITCH POINTS.3.6.1.
