Scheduled Maintenance4.9.13. Friction Clutch TestThe clutch should be tested when placing the machine in service and at scheduledintervals thereafter. The clutch is factory-adjusted to throw a load in accordance withAREMA Signal Manual Part 12.2.5. Slipping current may be varied to meet yourproperty’s specifications. To test the clutch setting, proceed as follows:Table 4–21. Friction Clutch Test ProcedureStepAction1 Shunt out operating winding of overload relay (housed internally in <strong>Models</strong><strong>5G</strong> and <strong>5H</strong>, housed externally in wayside case for <strong>Models</strong> <strong>5E</strong> and <strong>5F</strong>).2 Place an obstruction (1/2 inch to 4 inch) between the switch point and thestock rail, no closer than six (6) inches from the tip of the switch point.WARNINGDO NOT USE THE 1/4 INCH OBSTRUCTION GAUGE AS ANOBSTRUCTION WHILE OPERATING THE SWITCHMACHINE UNDER POWER. DAMAGE TO THE LOCKASSEMBLY MAY OCCUR IF THE SWITCH MACHINEMOVES THE HEAD OF THE STOCK RAIL ENOUGH TOLOCK.3 Open the gear compartment cover to gain access to the cutout switchterminal connections.4 Connect a 30-0-30 DC ammeter in series with the motor by opening thecrank contact and inserting the ammeter between the connections.5 Operate the switch against the obstruction.
