Main Gear Maintenance ProcedureStepAction1 NOTEFor main gear disassembly and reassembly, seeTable 6–7.Clean the main gear of grease, oil, and dirt by using a cloth dampened withan approved cleaning solvent. Do not soak the main gear bearing incleaning solvent.For Models 5E and 5G, apply grease to roller through fitting on main gearand this procedure is complete.For Models 5F and 5H, which are equipped with three tubes that requirelubrication, complete Step 2.2 The Model 5F and 5H throw-bar and locking-bar roller (9), hand-throw clutchsleeve (10), and surface between the crankshaft and main gear (22) arelubricated through three tubes, see Figure 4–2. One open tube with agrease fitting is used to lubricate the roller. The long closed tube with thegrease fitting is used to lubricate the surface between the crankshaft and themain gear. The short closed tube is used to lubricate the hand-throw clutchgear and the clutch sleeve.Do not use an excessive amount of grease.To use these tubes, proceed as follows:a. Remove short closed tube from crankshaft.b. Insert open tube into crankshaft. Force grease through tube to lubricateroller. Remove tube and clip it inside of the gear compartment cover.c. Insert long closed tube into crankshaft. Force grease through tube tolubricate crankshaft and main gear surfaces. Remove tube and clip it to theinside of gear compartment cover.d. Insert short closed tube into crankshaft. Before forcing grease into tube,put selector lever in HAND position and operate hand-throw lever to moveswitch points. This action ensures that the sliding clutch sleeve is fullyengaged in the HAND position and lubrication will be as intended. Forcegrease into tube to lubricate parts.
