178 God’s Workwater unto repentance: but he that cometh afterme is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthyto bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,and with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, andhe will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather hiswheat into the garner; but he will burn up thechaff with unquenchable fire.John, The Baptist discusses the importance of repentance withvery significant scriptural lessons. Notice the power of his introductorystatement, “But when he saw many of the Phariseesand Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generationof vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrathto come” (Verse 7). John did not mince words. This wrath issomething that most have never understood.Fruits Of RepentanceWhat wrath is John talking about? It was the impending doomfor that society. This would be the eventual destruction broughtabout by Rome in 66-70 A.D. That is why John said, “… 8 Bringforth therefore fruits meet [acceptable] for repentance…” Herevealed that trouble was coming. Now the question is, what waswrong with The Pharisees and Sadducees which made it impossiblefor John to baptize them? Many bypass this question, figuringthe problem with these top religious figures was that they were allsteeped in their traditions, along with being self-righteous aboutit. But that is only an assumption. It is not the answer to thequestion.The real situation was that John found himself in a position wherehe was attempting to bring The Pharisees and Sadducees to adeeper understanding of the significance of their actions.
