70 God’s Workit shall not be so among you: but whosoever willbe great among you, let him be your minister.First and foremost, notice that Jesus said the minister should haveno authority to rule over The Church. The minister must servethe people he is helping, rather than feel as though he occupies aposition of “higher rank” or is a “master” of some sort. Jesus said,“Neither be ye called masters…” (Matthew 23:10).The minister must be an example of how the brethren should conducttheir own lives. That is one reason Paul would not receivemoney unless, or until, he was in need. Therefore, Christ saidthat if one occupies the position of a minister in God’s House, then that person must serve the church membership by benefitingthe church and not himself. In short, a minister should, “…not[be] greedy of filthy lucre [money]…” (I Timothy 3:3,8). Goingfurther, Jesus said that if any individual wanted to be chief (morethan others), let him be your servant. The word “servant” is exactlythe same as “diakonos” or “minister.” Christ said that ifany man wanted to be more than any other minister, then he mustdedicate himself to serving the church more than anyone else. Then Jesus gave the prime example to show how Christ Himselfserved everyone by giving His life for all, “…the Son of mancame not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give hislife a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Very plainly, Jesusdefines the ministry in these vital texts. He said that a ministermust carry no rank or authority over anyone in the church. Hemust be a servant, who serves others. Therefore, to be a minister, one must attend to all the needs of the church and do God’s“work.” He must do this more than anyone else in the church. Inother words, his degree of dedication to these things is the majorpoint of qualification for being a minister.
