It is said, “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth” (Exodus21:24). The Israelites had to keep the entire Letter of The Law(works, legalism) with no mercy given - only death. Why wasthis? The Letter of The Law was given as judgment for carnal,unrighteous people (I Timothy 1:9). The legalism of The Letterof The Law was to be their judge - without mercy. They were unrepentant.This legalistic Letter of The Law was added becausethey wouldn’t repent (Galatians 3:19).Carnal JudgmentWhen unrepentant people are put on trial and condemned, theirjudgment has an entirely different system - as opposed to the systemthat is employed for repentant people. When King Solomondedicated the first temple and prayed to God, he said, “ 31 If anyman trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid uponhim to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thinealtar in this house: 32 Then hear thou in heaven, and do, andjudge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his wayupon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him accordingto his righteousness” (I Kings 8:31-32).ShaphatThe word “judge” in the Hebrew language is “shaphat.” ThisHebrew word defines the entire judicial system. To “shaphat” is“to accuse,” then “indict someone of a crime, then put them ontrial to find this person guilty or innocent.” If that individual iscondemned (guilty), then there is no mercy, but rather the fullpenalty is exacted for the crime or sin.
