190 God’s Work-even before he had God’s Spirit. He would go to the synagoguesto contend with opposing viewpoints and to convince theleaders of each synagogue. Without knowing Jesus, God was alreadyusing Apollos as a powerful preacher. You saw the introductionto Apollos in Acts, “ 24 And a certain Jew named Apollos,born at Alexandria [Egypt] an eloquent man and mighty in thescriptures.” Apollos had studied diligently and understood muchabout what The Scriptures meant. This man is someone that eachand every person should be emulating, by studying to the samedegree. You should be mighty in The Scriptures, because it isGod’s “word.” Now you know that Apollos, “…came to Ephesus.25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; andbeing fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently thethings of the Lord, knowing [what]? only the baptism of John.”He didn’t know about Jesus and The Holy Spirit. He was onlybaptized in The Baptism of John, which was to repent and put todeath all the negative pulls of the human flesh.That is all Apollos knew. But because he was mighty in TheScriptures, he was already preaching. He had the gift of “communicationskills.” You read, “ 26 And he began to speak boldlyin the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard,they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way ofGod more perfectly.” This shows that he knew the repentanceof John. Here is a critical observation. When you are “repentant,”you are “teachable.” Resistance to being taught disappears.You still remain fervent in The Scriptures since you arestill teachable.John’s BaptismThe text states, “ 27 And when he was disposed to pass intoAchaia [Southern Greece], the brethren wrote, exhorting the
