218 QUIPPERY / SEEDS & WEEDSAfter some research (asking my friends on Facebook what this stinky,slimy crap growing in my yard and attracting flies is) I learned that it’s afungus called Stinkhorn.So I googled “Stinkhorn.”I learned that itproduces its slimy,stinky substance toattract flies becausethat’s how thespores are spread.See, God does havea sense of humor,but . . . barf.While deep inresearch, I noticedthat the Latin wordfor the family ofStinkhornmushrooms is“Phallaceae,” as in“phallic.” Yep.

TheLatin name truly fits.And, Iguess not soironically, thisis the stinkhornegg when it’scut open.I’m notmaking thisstuff up.Soobviously Ididn’t wantthese thingsgrowing in myyard and Idefinitelydidn’t want them to spread, as they were doing so quite quickly. So basedon my friend Kenya’s advice and what I googled on how to get rid of them,I did the following:
