THE FUNNIEST THINGS PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT GARDENING 33

The hand mower

Some veteran gardeners are so in tune with plants that

they can communicate with them — they’re plant

whisperers.

They generally don’t let people know about

their ability because they don’t want to you to

think they’re crazy.

But they know what plants like and what

they don’t like.

One thing they will tell you: Plants

hate the ear-splitting, root-stem-andleaf-shuddering

clamor of

power mowers and weed

whips. (They also hate

low-flying jets,

ambulance and police

sirens, and highway

noise.) Subjected to

these noises, plants

would pull themselves

underground by the roots if they could.

That’s why plant whisperers use hand mowers.
