sixth sense, I wonder if we could somehow tune in to that time, to those

guys, in this place. I’d like to think we’d be laughing with them.”

“In geologic time, they were here, like, just a few moments ago. Like

we should still be able to hear the echoes of their voices.”

That night we lay out under the stars, Ol Doinyo Lengai silhouetted

against the dark sky. We reflected on the human story arc, unspooling

over millions of years, humanity diffusing around the world yet ultimately

one family.

“Tomorrow we drive down to Laetoli,” one of us said.

“My thought exactly — to those 3.6-

million-year-old footprints.”

“Maybe they laughed with each

other too.”

“Of course — why not?”

The African sun rose

the next day and we

headed southwest, laying

down footprints of our

own.
