THE FUNNIEST THINGS PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT GARDENING 27

acting dibber, the extra strength dibber, the lowfat

dibber, and the unscented dibber. Currently in

development: the cheese crust dibber.

But just as she was about to commandeer the

dibber market, some enterprising Stanford

students, working in their dorm rooms, developed

an app that connected dibber users worldwide

through their dibbers. Successive upgrades

enabled gardeners to test their soil . . . test their

pregnancy status . . . even test whether it’s raining

and signal gardeners to go inside.

With each new development, giddy gardeners gathered in groups

outside garden centers for days ahead of the release.

Even non-gardeners lined up to acquire them.

But then came the game-changer. The definitive

dibber disrupter.

A ninth-grade girl in Del Rio, Texas, for her science

project, developed a fully digital, fully self-dibbering dibber.

Every comfort and safety feature had been seamlessly

integrated, even enabling gardeners to start their dibbers

remotely, so they were warmed up by the time they got to

their gardens. Hers was a concept no one had ever

conceptualized.
