The trowel
We won’t repeat the worn-out lines that gardening is learned by trowel
and error and don’t throw in the trowel. We’ll say them just this once and
expect you’ll remember them.
The trowel is a starter shovel. It’s the shovel you give to four-yearolds
who are just starting out in the garden. It’s a teeny tiny
shovel used for digging teeny tiny holes in the ground.
Be careful though. The trowel is a gateway tool, the
beginning of a slippery slope. Once people start using
trowels, it’s only a matter of time before they go on to
harder and more dangerous and addictive implements
— shovels, backhoes, trenchers, and excavators.
Trowels themselves are wonderfully
multi-purpose implements. Can’t find
anything to dish out the fruit salad or chili
you’re serving at your garden party?
Just hose off your trowel off and
you’re good to go — it’s the perfect
