Banking and Finance Major (BKF)<br />

The School of Economics and Finance recommends the following course combinations which provide<br />

excellent professional recognition and career opportunities:<br />

The extended majors in Banking and Funds Management build on the corporate and institutional finance<br />

studied in the major. The extended majors provide the opportunity for in-depth, comprehensive study of<br />

banking, funds management and risk management. Four electives are available for another area of study.<br />

The Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) with a double major in Accountancy provides the<br />

opportunity for professional recognition in both disciplines. The Banking and Finance major is enhanced<br />

by additional Accountancy studies. These graduates are in high demand for a wide range of career<br />

opportunities.<br />

The Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) with a double major in Economics provides the<br />

opportunity for professional recognition in both disciplines, offering a wide range of career opportunities,<br />

particularly in the economic and financial forecasting functions within the financial and government<br />

sectors.<br />

Course structures for these combinations are available at the Faculty Enquiries counters. Enrolment advice<br />

is available from the School of Economics and Finance (Level 8, Z Block, Gardens Point).<br />

Professional Recognition<br />

The Extended Major in Banking or the Extended Major in Funds Management is recognised as satisfying<br />

the academic requirements for Senior Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and<br />

Finance. If the units AYB305 Company Law and Practice, AYB223 Law of Business Associations and<br />

EFB308 Finance III are included as electives, students will satisfy the academic requirements for membership<br />

of the Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries in Australia.<br />

Students completing the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) with a double major in Accountancy<br />

(excluding AYB221 Computerised Accounting Systems), as well as AYB225 Management Accounting I,<br />

AYB223 Law of Business Associations, AYB325 Taxation Law and AYB311 Financial Accounting Theory<br />

or AYB321 Management Accounting Theory and either EFB310 Financial Institutions – Control and EFB311<br />

Financial Institutions – Lending OR EFB308 Finance III and EFB318 Portfolio & Security Analysis, are<br />

recognised as satisfying the academic requirements for Associate membership of the ASCPA as well as<br />

Senior Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance. The ASCPA will not<br />

accept a grade of 3 in the advanced core units.<br />

Students completing the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) with a double major in Economics<br />

(including EFB308 Finance III and EFB318 Portfolio & Security Analysis as substitute major core units;<br />

OR EFB311 Financial Institutions – Lending and EFB310 Financial Institutions -Control as substitute<br />

major core units with AYB120 Business Law and AYB312 Financial Institutions Law as elective units) can<br />

expect to gain admission to Senior Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance<br />

as well as professional membership of the Economic Society of Australia (Qld).<br />
