Further development of students’ capacity to analyse, evaluate<br />

and solve business problems and encourages them to develop<br />

the facility for independent thought and critical analysis.<br />

In this unit students are required to: (a) examine a HR<br />

function in an organisation, and report observations; (b) relate<br />

these observations to relevant theory and recent research;<br />

and (c) develop an integrated view of HR, including its functions,<br />

processes, stakeholders, and environment. Finally, the<br />

unit will focus on any conceptual, theoretical, research or practical<br />

ORGANISATION<br />

This unit will encourage students to develop critical awareness<br />

of current debates in the area. It will also develop the<br />

students’ critical, analytical and intellectual powers at an advanced<br />

level. It will connect the social, organisational and legislative<br />

aspects of industrial design relation within an analytical<br />

framework, and will enhance knowledge of workplace studies.<br />

Through this unit students are introduced to the social<br />

aspects of industrial organisation and industrial relations.<br />

Workplace studies are included and associated legislative aspects.<br />

Concepts such as the new ‘Managerialism’ are explored.<br />

■ MGN516 POLICY ANALYSIS<br />

A central aim of the program is to develop skills in the analysis<br />

of policy content and policy process. It provides a basic<br />

methodological framework for the systematic development<br />

of those skills with two related objectives: (a) to examine a<br />

range of models of public policy processes with a view to<br />

determining their validity and utility, and (b) to develop a capacity<br />

for policy analysis, utilising a variety of conceptual<br />

frameworks. Topics include: policy design, formation and<br />

implementation, and theories of policy.<br />

EVALUATION<br />

Understanding of program management and evaluation in the<br />

public sector, with an emphasis on skills development; theory<br />

■ MGN520 RESEARCH DISSERTATION<br />

All students undertake a research dissertation. Each student<br />

is assigned to a supervisor, subject to the approval of the Course<br />

Coordinator, in consultation with the relevant Head of School.<br />

In general, the supervisor provides guidance in relation to the<br />

choice, preparation and submission of the dissertation. Supervisors<br />

are appointed before students commence the research<br />

dissertation unit. The supervisor shall not be an examiner of<br />

the dissertation. The dissertation is examined by an examining<br />

committee of at least three, appointed by the Dean, and<br />

consists of at least two examiners, one of whom may be external<br />

to the university, plus the Course Coordinator, who acts<br />

as chair of the committee.<br />

■ MGN521 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY<br />

Equips students with a range of ideas and methods allowing<br />

them to analyse, evaluate and conduct research in discipline<br />

areas within the fields of study. Essential preparation for the<br />

thesis. Areas include: science and knowledge – paradigms;<br />

analysis and criticism; research design; data collection; data<br />

manipulation and interpretation; presentation.<br />

■ MGN522 RESEARCH SEMINAR<br />

Quality in policy research requires sound understanding of<br />

appropriate research methodologies, their design and implementation.<br />

This unit is intended to help provide the student<br />

with that understanding, tailored to the specific needs of individual<br />

research dissertations. It provides a particular focus<br />

upon methods and techniques relevant to policy research.<br />

■ MGN523 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY POLICY<br />

This course assists students in understanding science and technology<br />

policy. It is structured into two parts. The first examines<br />

policy structures and processes whilst the second examines<br />

science and technology policy issues which are sector<br />

specific. The latter part of this course has a particular focus<br />

on policy and the issues are sector specific. The latter part of<br />

of technology although issues relevant to other sectors<br />

are also addressed.<br />
