■ MIB310 RETAIL MARKETING<br />

This unit is an introduction to the dynamics of the retailing<br />

industry. It provides the student with detailed knowledge of<br />

the way retail marketing is conducted nationally and internationally<br />

from both strategic and operational perspectives. The<br />

unit provides a balance of theory and application in topics<br />

such as retail institutions and the retail life cycle, macro and<br />

micro store location analysis, store layout, planning and design,<br />

merchandising promotion and stock planning, franchising<br />

and industry trends. Field trips and instore projects are an integral<br />

part of the learning process.<br />

■ MIB311 SERVICES MARKETING<br />

This subject is concerned with the special characteristics of<br />

services and the marketing strategies needed to deal with those<br />

characteristics. Topics covered include the nature and classification<br />

of services; the differences between services and products<br />

and their implications for marketing strategy; the concept<br />

of productivity for services including the management<br />

of demand and supply; the search for service quality; customer<br />

service; distribution; and international trade in services.<br />

■ MIB314 STRATEGIC BUSINESS ANALYSIS<br />

A knowledge of international and domestic industry market<br />

trends and their specific impacts upon the organisation provides<br />

the basic data for the development of flexible strategic visions<br />

and plans. The aim of this unit is to provide an examination of<br />

major paradigms in strategic formulation and implementation,<br />

and to develop a synthesis of competing prescriptive and descriptive<br />

approaches. It will enable the development of an integrating<br />

framework to explore why organisations differ and how<br />

these differences, in terms of individual competencies and organisational<br />

capacities, provide for sustainable competitive advantage<br />

in domestic and international markets.<br />

■ MIB315 STRATEGIC MARKETING<br />

Strategic Marketing is the capstone marketing unit. Students<br />

are exposed to a variety of advanced marketing techniques<br />

and issues through lectures, seminars and case studies. Topics<br />

include: determining what marketing strategy can realistically<br />

accomplish for a business; identifying underlying factors that<br />

must be considered in developing marketing strategy; discussion<br />

of problems and their solution for successful marketing<br />

strategy implementation; bringing in the customer focus in<br />

developing marketing strategy; organising for successful strategy<br />

■ MIB316 TOURISM DEVELOPMENT<br />

The operation and development of tourism markets is the central<br />

concern of this unit, building upon the base provided in<br />

MIB225. It focuses upon product and service development,<br />

demand and market strategies, using a variety of case study<br />

materials and analytical methods. At the completion of the<br />

unit the student will have an understanding of the economic<br />

context of tourism, the development of tourism markets, and<br />

the factors that contribute to successful tourism ventures.<br />

■ MIB317 CONTEMPORARY BUSINESS IN ASIA<br />

The business and cultural environments of Japan, China the<br />

NICs and ASEAN; the major Asian economies, their structure<br />

and related issues; social and institutional foundations of the<br />

economies concerned; interaction between Asia and Australia.<br />

■ MIN400 ARTS ADMINISTRATION & SOCIETY<br />

This unit analyses the structures and role of cultural organisations<br />

in the local, national and international community and<br />

the processes involved in administering arts in society. It focuses<br />

on the external influences on the arts through investigation<br />

of public policy, funding processes, cultural economics,<br />

strategic planning, community development, Indigenous arts,<br />

diversity and international research.<br />

■ MIN401 AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN AFFAIRS &<br />

BUSINESS<br />

Australian business exists within a complex and dynamic global<br />

environment. An important part of the structure of that<br />

environment, especially as regards access to various national<br />

markets, is determined by national governments and a range<br />

of international agreements entered into by those governments.<br />

Australian governments play a vital role, through their various<br />

external affairs policies, in this system. The aim of this<br />

unit is to provide students with an understanding of external<br />

affairs policies in relation to business, their development and<br />

implementation.<br />

■ MIN403 BUSINESS IN ASIA<br />

The aim of this unit is to enable a more intensive study of<br />

business and markets in Asia. The development of the major<br />

industries will be examined, together with major intra-regional<br />

patterns of trade, commerce and finance. Significant economic,<br />

political and social factors determining developments will be<br />

focused upon, as well as regulatory restraints governing market<br />

access. The student will be required to undertake a project<br />

which requires the application of knowledge of the region to<br />

a business issue.<br />
