STRAIT ISLANDER CULTURE<br />

This unit continues to develop students’ knowledge about<br />

and culturally in relation to these changes and gives them the<br />

opportunity to explore and investigate areas of interest.<br />

■ EDB338 MURRI & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER<br />

STUDIES: AN INTEGRATED PERSPECTIVE<br />

Intended for students who already have a solid grounding in<br />

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture and<br />

who have an understanding of the issues that concern Murri<br />

and Torres Strait Islander people today. Students have the<br />

opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the complexities<br />

of the cultures of these two distinct groups and to<br />

examine and evaluate issues of concern relevant to their areas<br />

of interest.<br />

Self-initiated and self-directed academic study in an area of<br />

educational management interest which allows study either<br />

■ EDB442 INTEGRATED PROFESSIONAL<br />

SEMINARS<br />

The unit is designed to operate in conjunction with the training<br />

provided to educational advisors by the Queensland Department<br />

of Education. Students compile a portfolio based on<br />

a survey of professional development literature and an<br />

inservice activity which they design and implement with classroom<br />

teachers. A report is compiled in which students describe<br />

their work and reflect on its effectiveness.<br />

■ EDN602 ADVANCED SEMINARS<br />

This unit provides for the special needs and interests of students.<br />

Small groups of students interact at an advanced level<br />

with specialists or visiting scholars in seminars, conferences<br />

and research projects.<br />

■ EDN603 INDEPENDENT STUDY<br />

This unit allows individual students to follow their own particular<br />

needs/interests and/or to take advantage of specialised<br />

lecturer expertise through working autonomously on relevant<br />

topics of interest under the supervision of individual lecturers.<br />

■ EDN608 PROJECT<br />

A minor research project that provides students with an opportunity<br />

to extend, synthesise and analyse knowledge from<br />

core and elective units through, for example, a critical literature<br />

review, the development of appropriate educational resources,<br />

or a project of change in their workplace.<br />

■ EDN611 UNDERSTANDING EDUCATIONAL<br />

RESEARCH<br />

The foundation unit for studying research methods in education.<br />

It focuses on reading, understanding and evaluating edu-<br />

cational research both within and across different paradigms<br />

used in educational research.<br />

■ EDN612 CONDUCTING EDUCATIONAL<br />

RESEARCH<br />

Building on the understandings developed in EDN611 , this<br />

unit focuses on developing the skills and knowledge necessary<br />

to design and conduct educational research. Structured<br />

to enable students to pursue in-depth studies in selected designs<br />

and methods with a view to producing an initial research<br />

proposal.<br />

■ EDN620 DISSERTATION<br />

Designed to enable students to develop their research potential<br />

■ EDP508 PRACTICUM IN EARLY CHILDHOOD 1<br />

Observation; planning, implementation and evaluation of curriculum<br />

for children in early childhood; communication with<br />

children, parents and colleagues; the demonstration of organisational<br />

and administrative skills in an early childhood setting.<br />

■ EDP509 PRACTICUM IN EARLY CHILDHOOD 2<br />

Observation; design, implementation and evaluation of programs<br />

for children in the early childhood age range; communication<br />

with children, parents and colleagues; increased responsibility<br />

for control and management in the early childhood<br />

setting; catering for children in the early childhood age<br />

range.<br />

■ EDP514 FIELD PROJECT<br />

An applied action research project focusing on the development<br />

of a management-oriented program; the delivery and evaluation<br />

of the program within an existing educational service.<br />

■ EDP516 EXTENDED FIELD PROJECT<br />

An applied action research project focusing on the development<br />

of a management-oriented program. The delivery and<br />

then evaluation of the program within an existing educational<br />

service occurs. The Extended Field Project includes a research<br />

report with greater breadth and depth than the 12 credit point<br />

Field Project.<br />

■ EDP602 ADULT LEARNING & TEACHING IN<br />

HIGHER EDUCATION<br />

The theory and practice of teaching adults; the appropriateness<br />

of particular approaches to the needs, interests and learning<br />

styles of adult audiences; involves the application of theoretical<br />

perspectives to the practice of teaching adults in varied<br />

higher education and contexts.<br />
