strategies for more effective teaching of Aboriginal and<br />

Torres Strait Islander students, together with strategies for<br />

working with parents and the community.<br />

allowing them to engage with others as co-theorists<br />

in pedagogical work.<br />

justifying ethical judgements; the place of ethical values<br />

in teaching; creating an informed and ethical citizenship;<br />

a code of ethics for teachers.<br />

analysis of the key issues in Reconciliation; processes of cul-<br />

relevant to educational change.<br />

■ CPB424 UNDERSTANDING SCHOOLS & THEIR<br />

COMMUNITIES<br />

Schools and education systems face many pressures and competing<br />

demands which have altered the nature of classroom<br />

teaching, administration, and relationships between teachers,<br />

students and their families. This unit, drawing on sociological<br />

perspectives, provides a way of understanding, evaluating and<br />

critically responding to these pressures which impact on<br />

schools.<br />

■ CPB426 USING HISTORY IN EDUCATION<br />

RESEARCH<br />

An exploration of some of the legislative and administrative<br />

developments of Australian education. The focus will be on<br />

the sources of influence on education policy and administration,<br />

especially cultural, social, political and economic; the<br />

working of education bureaucracies; the leadership styles and<br />

administrative practices of professional leaders in education;<br />

case studies drawn from key turning points in schooling and<br />

society and studies of centralisation, decentralisation and structural<br />

reform.<br />

■ CPB442 CULTURAL DIVERSITY & EDUCATION<br />

This unit explores the multicultural nature of Australian society<br />

and its educational approaches to addressing the needs of<br />

cultural diversity. Participants will analyse the role of the<br />

school and the teacher with respect to schooling and pluralism.<br />

Students will learn how to identify and challenge various<br />

forms of discrimination, and recognise the kinds of social,<br />

curriculum, and classroom management policies which are<br />

sensitive to the needs of students from diverse socio-cultural<br />

backgrounds.<br />

of indigenous communities in policies and programs.<br />

■ CPB446 GENDER & SEXUALITY ISSUES FOR<br />

TEACHERS<br />

Gender and sexuality in the school context; historical and cultural<br />

nature of gender relations; current debates and their impact<br />

on gender equity policies; theories of gender and sexuality<br />

being contingent on their social context; social theories,<br />

particularly in the area of sexuality, feminism, gender construction<br />

and gender relations and school practice.<br />
