YOUNG CHILDREN<br />

Students examine dilemmas arising when teachers plan to negotiate<br />

the curriculum with children and parents in child care,<br />

preschool/kindergarten and primary school settings. Critical<br />

analysis of strategies teachers use to create ‘spaces’ where children<br />

are able to construct knowledge in personally relevant ways.<br />

Historical and contemporary trends in art education; philosophy<br />

and practice in early childhood visual arts education; indepth<br />

childhood; curating children’s art exhibitions; public information<br />

about children’s artistry; advocacy for improving options<br />

for young children in the visual arts.<br />

Contemporary issues facing families such as changing employment<br />

patterns, changing family forms, ethnic and cultural diversity<br />

and new technologies; indepth analysis of contemporary<br />

issues as they impact on families and on early childhood<br />

education; strategies for responding to families and the key issues<br />

they face in the context of early childhood education.<br />

■ EAB319 EARLY CHILDHOOD SOCIO-CULTURAL<br />

CONTEXTS<br />

Opportunity to investigate a broad range of issues currently affecting<br />

early childhood educators and their clients, with in-depth<br />

study of an issue selected from this broad range. Issues include<br />

work based child care and the effect on children, families and<br />

teachers; vacation care programs and before and after school<br />

programs and what this means for primary school children and<br />

teachers; early childhood educators as agents of social change;<br />

policy decisions made at state and federal levels which affect<br />

early childhood education; how changing patterns of work/<br />

employment have affected early childhood education; the low<br />

status of caregivers in society who are entrusted with children,<br />

‘our investment for the future’; the debate about whether child<br />

care is a tool for the liberation of women or the repression of<br />

other women; children, poverty and early childhood services;<br />

children, ethnicity and early childhood services.<br />

CHILDHOOD<br />

In-depth examination of legal and ethical responsibilities of<br />

early childhood educators; historical overview of changing<br />

trends in legislation relating to children; current issues in chil-<br />

dren’s rights, including welfare, human rights, child care; professional<br />

ethics and the responsibility of the early childhood<br />

educator to children, parents, the community, society, colleagues<br />

and the profession; advocacy for improved opportunities<br />

for young children; case studies of Australian issues in<br />

advocacy, ethics and the law.<br />

YOUNG CHILDREN<br />

An overview of science topics, concepts and processes as experienced<br />

in everyday life, in the home and various early childhood<br />

educational settings; exploration of a food cycle approach<br />

to learning, with consideration of space, time, resources and<br />

teaching strategies; current early childhood policies and practices<br />

which affect the needs of children from birth to age eight<br />

years; staff health in relation to early childhood program delivery.<br />

WITH SPECIAL NEEDS INTO EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS<br />

The integrated approach to teaching children with disabilities<br />

through an effective and cooperative team approach of teachers,<br />

families and support personnel; philosophical and policy<br />

issues for the least restrictive early education for young children<br />

with disabilities; the range and nature of disabilities early<br />

childhood teachers may encounter in their practice; development,<br />

implementation and evaluation of individualised programs;<br />

teaching strategies for integration into regular programs;<br />

needs and concerns of families; the range of support<br />

services available to families and teachers.<br />

■ EAB325 MANAGEMENT OF EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD SERVICES<br />

General management theory and practice; organisational and<br />

leadership styles; management of various early childhood services;<br />

setting policies and planning for services; implementing<br />

day-to-day tasks and operations; managing and working with<br />

people; considering ethical issues and conduct; working outside<br />

early childhood services.<br />

■ EAB326 MUSIC EDUCATION & YOUNG<br />

CHILDREN<br />

In-depth exploration of musical elements in relation to concept<br />

development in young children; application of specific<br />

techniques for guiding children’s understanding, such as<br />

solfege, ostinato with Orff-type instruments, and listening with<br />

a musical focus; extension of personal musicianship and creativity;<br />

integration of music with other areas.<br />

■ EAB328 RESEARCH IN EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

DEVELOPMENT<br />

Research design, methodology and analysis as applied to the<br />

study of young children’s development. This elective is recommended<br />

for students considering enrolment in postgraduate<br />

research courses in Early Childhood. Longitudinal, crosssectional<br />

and cross-sequential designs; experimental, quasiexperimental<br />

and naturalistic designs; hypothesis generation;<br />

ethical issues in conducting research with young children;<br />

measurement and sampling; introduction to descriptive and<br />

inferential statistics; report writing and organisation.<br />
