■ LEB431 INTERACTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES<br />

Interactive Teaching Strategies offer alternatives to whole-class<br />

or lecture methods of presentation, and can be used with any<br />

age level and in any content area (K–12, TAFE, UNI). They<br />

increase confidence, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of learning;<br />

insure less separation due to race, gender, ethnicity, or status;<br />

make learning relevant to individual experience, and invite<br />

the use of higher order thinking skills. This is a practical,<br />

hands-on subject, structured according to principles of adult<br />

learning, a workshop format with contract-based assessment.<br />

■ LEB441 EDUCATIONAL COUNSELLING<br />

The nature of counselling/helping in educational contexts; the<br />

educator as counsellor; characteristics of effective helpers, practical<br />

of some counselling theories to the educational contexts;<br />

practical sessions using educationally based role plays to demonstrate<br />

effective use of the skills learned. Compulsory study<br />

■ LEB443 HUMAN SEXUALITY & LEARNING<br />

Key topics in sexual behaviour and learning such as heterosexual<br />

and homosexual sexuality across the life span, contraception,<br />

abortion, STDs, child sexual abuse, sexual assault,<br />

pornography. Implications for school, community, and healthcare<br />

workers and educators, with emphasis on the former.<br />

■ LEB444 HUMAN SEXUALITY & DEVELOPMENT<br />

sexual dysfunction, transsexuality, and HIV/AIDS. Implications<br />

for school, community and health-care workers and<br />

educators, with emphasis on the latter.<br />

comprehension and evaluation of research findings drawn<br />

from a variety of perspectives, paradigms and methodologies;<br />

development of skills to conduct research appropriate to answer<br />

questions.<br />

COUNSELLING<br />

The major theoretical approaches to counselling are applied<br />

to problems and concerns arising in the educational context.<br />

Theories outlined include Psychoanalytic, Adlerian, Existential,<br />

Person-Centred, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Behaviour,<br />

Rational-Emotive, and Reality. Skills and techniques<br />

associated with each major theory will be presented and related<br />

to educationally based problems and concerns. The effects<br />

and outcomes of counselling inventions will be investigated<br />

and ethical issues will be addressed.<br />

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE<br />

Professional practices of educational counsellors working in<br />

the P-12 context; intervention, prevention, affective, and developmental<br />

programs discussed; adolescent issues and career<br />

counselling outlined; consultation: models, theories and<br />

practices; self-management skills highlighted: time management,<br />

program evaluation, accountability and decision-making<br />

discussed.<br />

■ LEN604 PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT<br />

Assessment techniques and strategies; assessment of intelligence,<br />

academic skills, aptitude, personality; reliability, validity,<br />

process of administering assessment instruments; interpretation<br />

of test results and assessment data; using assessment data<br />

in programming and placement.<br />

■ LEN605 LEARNERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:<br />

PROGRAMMING FOR INCLUSIVE EDUCATION<br />

Special educational needs of children in early childhood,<br />

school (P-12) and post-secondary settings arising from physical,<br />

cognitive, behavioural and socio-cultural differences; developmental<br />

screening; diagnosing student functioning in cognitive,<br />

social-emotional, self-help and motor skill areas; programming<br />

and curriculum decision making for children with<br />

special needs; techniques of formative and summative assessment<br />

appropriate to student learning needs; strategies for inclusive<br />

education; roles and models of support and advisory<br />

personnel including in-service strategies.<br />

■ LEN606 REMEDIATING OF LEARNING<br />

DIFFICULTIES<br />

In-depth review of research of the impact of learning disabilities/difficulties<br />

and developmental delay on the learning of<br />

literacy from years 1-12 and in post-secondary education; studies<br />

in language and its use in learning; assessment and monitoring<br />

techniques and approaches to literacy acquisition by<br />

students with learning difficulties/disabilities. Draws on developments<br />

in areas such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics,<br />

metacognition and process approaches to literacy and learning<br />

within an inclusive education framework.<br />

■ LEN607 CAREER EDUCATION & CAREER<br />

GUIDANCE<br />

Focus on career planning as a lifelong process, emphasising that<br />

education and guidance programs focus on skill development<br />

for repeated decision-making throughout the lifespan; the background<br />

and influence of career development theory; the complementary<br />

relationship between career education and career guidance.<br />

Educator and counsellor skills necessary to enable students<br />

to effectively assist career development are included.<br />

■ LEN608 FOUNDATIONS OF ADULT LEARNING &<br />

DEVELOPMENT<br />

Provides students with an opportunity to develop an understanding<br />

of the complex nature of the adult learning and development<br />

process. This is achieved by exposing students to<br />

contemporary theories and strategies in adult learning and<br />

development and extending their knowledge to the adult and<br />

workplace environment. Key concepts such as the motivation,<br />

self-directed learning and knowledge construction are addressed.<br />

Special emphasis is placed on transferring the theory<br />

to practice.<br />
