suggest the most efficient control strategies for physical and<br />

Chemical hazards in the working environment. It will include<br />

an analysis of the principles and design of ventilation systems.<br />

MANAGEMENT 3<br />

Health information systems outside acute care hospitals; special<br />

purpose health systems, ambulatory health record systems,<br />

and those used in health care facilities other than acute<br />

care hospitals, systems for the registration and notification of<br />

disease problems, clinical classification systems other than<br />

ICD9Cm and nomenclatures, which may be used in specialised<br />

health settings; concepts and processes of quality assurance<br />

in health (e.g. accreditation, criteria audits, etc.).<br />

■ PUB602 SPORTS MEDICINE<br />

The importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis,<br />

evaluation and treatment of sports injuries. Students<br />

study the symptomology of lower limb functional pathologies<br />

as related to specific sports and devise treatment programs.<br />

An understanding of the principles of human fitness and potential<br />

in relation to athletic injuries and expectations forms<br />

the foundation for further studies.<br />

■ PUB603 CLINICAL SCIENCE 4<br />

Prepares the student for the transition to private practice. Students<br />

are introduced to the sports medicine patient in terms of<br />

the range of injuries which occur affecting the lower back,<br />

hip, knee, ankle and foot. Case presentations are an integral<br />

part of clinical learning and sessions conclude with exchange<br />

between students and staff over case management.<br />

History of dietetics and the role of management in dietetics;<br />

planning and organisation; leadership; peer review systems;<br />

to dietetic management; managing Change; casemix funding,<br />

management tools, marketing, planning community based<br />

programs; team building; managing role conflict.<br />

MANAGEMENT<br />

This unit explains firstly how a professional practice may be<br />

set up and how a small practice can operate as a business enterprise.<br />

Methods of budgeting, finance and control are explained.<br />

Secondly it develops an interest in podiatry Research<br />

using scientific methods of investigation and presentation.<br />

Students are encouraged to publish these projects as original<br />

material in related professional journals.<br />

■ PUB611 RISK MANAGEMENT<br />

This unit will provide students with the knowledge and skills<br />

for the assessment and quantification of risk in the workplace.<br />

It will investigate the various models available to investigate<br />

and analyse accidents and propose strategies to prevent similar<br />

incidents in the future. Various hazard identification techniques<br />

such as HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis and FMEA will<br />

be discussed. The subject will provide students with the ability<br />

to position occupational health and safety within an organisation’s<br />

strategic decision making process.<br />

■ PUB612 HEALTH PROMOTION & EDUCATION<br />

The scope and nature of health promotion; use of resources<br />

for such activities; planning, conduct and evaluation of health<br />

promotion programs; adult learning principles; training needs<br />

analysis; training program development and evaluation; specific<br />

training methods.<br />

■ PUB613 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY<br />

PRACTICE 2<br />

This unit is designed to enable students to apply the theoretical<br />

knowledge gained throughout the course. Is uses field studies<br />

and exercises to further extend students’ competence in<br />

the practical application of the various principles of occupational<br />

health and safety in the workplace. This unit also examines<br />

the current issues in the field of occupational health<br />

and safety and aims to equip students to play a role in debates<br />

around these issues.<br />

■ PUB614 INDUSTRY SPECIALISATION<br />

The hazards associated with particular industries including construction,<br />

manufacturing, Chemical and mining through field<br />

trips and specialist lectures; the various laws and standards that<br />

apply to these industries and an investigation of the control strategies<br />

applicable to the management of hazards in industry; introduction<br />

to the principles of workplace rehabilitation.<br />
