advice of the Dean shall call upon the candidate to show cause why the enrolment of the candidate should<br />

not be terminated for lack of satisfactory progress.<br />

4.5 Upon failure of the candidate to show cause the candidate’s enrolment will be terminated.<br />

5. Confirmation of Candidature<br />

5.1 At the end of the second semester only after commencement of the dissertation component of the<br />

course the candidate will have to seek confirmation of candidature in accordance with this Rule.<br />

5.2 To seek confirmation of candidature the Supervisor shall submit a written report of the candidate’s<br />

progress together with a report from the candidate to the first Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee<br />

meeting held immediately after the end of the second semester of enrolment in the dissertation component<br />

of the degree.<br />

5.3 The report of the Supervisor shall provide a written appraisal of:<br />

the candidate’s progress<br />

the candidate’s suitability for continuation in the SJD program<br />

the full course of study<br />

likely budget requirements and funds available<br />

certification: signature of the Principal Supervisor and date.<br />

The report of the candidate shall provide:<br />

a detailed account of:<br />

– progress of the date, including details of completed coursework and grades obtained<br />

– problems encountered<br />

an indication of whether the thesis will be completed on time<br />

certification: signature of the candidate and date<br />

5.4 If confirmation of candidature is not approved then the Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee<br />

shall decide whether or not to extend the period for confirmation, and, if so, by what time, or recommend<br />

cancellation of enrolment, as the case may be.<br />

6. Time Limits<br />

6.1 Subject to Rules 6.2 and 6.3, a candidate may proceed either on a full-time or part-time basis.<br />

6.2 Subject to 6.3 and 6.5, and except in special circumstances and with the approval of the Research<br />

Management Committee, all candidates shall complete a minimum of 36 months’ registration if a full-time<br />

student, or 72 months if a part-time student, or such other period as may be approved by the Research<br />

Management Committee.<br />

6.3 Where the candidate is a holder of a Masters Degree in Law, the period of registration shall be not less<br />

than 30 months in the case of a full-time student and not less than 60 months in the case of a part-time<br />

student.<br />

6.4 Except in special circumstances and with the approval of the Research Management Committee:<br />

(i) A full-time candidate shall complete all the requirements for the degree not later than 54 months after<br />

first registration.<br />

(ii) A part-time candidate shall complete all the requirements for the degree not later than 72 months after<br />

first registration.<br />

6.5 Where a candidate has approval from the Faculty Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee to<br />

enrol in a dissertation component during a summer semester, the minimum time limit for registration may<br />

be reduced.<br />

7. Examination of the Dissertation<br />

7.1 The candidate shall present a dissertation of approximately 70 000 words which shall constitute a<br />

substantial and original contribution to knowledge and understanding in the area of the law that is the<br />

subject of the research, in satisfaction of Rule 1.1. The dissertation must include a statement of objectives<br />

of the investigation and must acknowledge the sources from which the information is derived, the extent to<br />

which the work of others has been used, and that the work is original and otherwise complies with the<br />
