An advanced seminar in Asia Pacific Studies normally taken<br />

by third and fourth year (Honours) students.<br />

■ HUB625 AMERICAN LITERATURE<br />

Concentrates principally on twentieth century American literature<br />

in the years preceding World War II and in the postwar<br />

construction period to the present. Particular emphasis<br />

on major preoccupations in literature and on the ways in which<br />

writers have responded to, and interpreted, political and social<br />

currents in the pre- and post-World War II periods.<br />

■ HUB626 CONTEMPORARY SOUTH-EAST ASIA<br />

An introduction to Southeast Asia as a region focusing on<br />

geographic characteristics, recent political developments,<br />

population and urban studies, economic development and social<br />

and cultural characteristics.<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 3 per week<br />

■ HUB627 AUSTRALIA & THE SOUTH PACIFIC<br />

Critical analysis of the history of Australian bilateral and<br />

multilateral links with the Pacific islands region, including<br />

Pacific frontier theory, sub-imperialism, colonial rule and contemporary<br />

dialogue over aid, trade, regionalism, defence, cultural<br />

exchange and migration. The unit will focus on events<br />

from 1788 to the present.<br />

■ HUB628 MODERN JAPAN<br />

The history of nineteenth and twentieth century Japan; the<br />

range of contemporary issues confronting Japan, including<br />

those associated with Japan’s increased power in the Asia/<br />

Pacific region. Where possible, primary source documentation<br />

is used to enhance historical understanding.<br />

■ HUB629 MODERN CHINA<br />

A historical survey of China during the nineteenth and twentieth<br />

centuries. The primary focus will be on the decline of<br />

the traditional Chinese state and the impact of foreign imperialism.<br />

Stress is placed on the growth of nationalism and the<br />

Chinese revolution. The modernisation of Chinese culture, the<br />

position of women and the forces which have brought China<br />

to resume its place as the major Asian power.<br />

■ HUB630 GEOGRAPHY OF EAST ASIA<br />

A geographical interpretation of the East Asia region covering<br />

China, Japan and Korea. This includes an examination of<br />

the region’s physical landscapes, human population distribution,<br />

demographic and cultural change, environmental issues<br />

and the role of the East Asian countries in the geopolitics of<br />

the Asia-Pacific region.<br />

■ HUB631 ADVANCED SEMINAR IN ASIA-PACIFIC<br />

STUDIES 2<br />

An advanced seminar in Asia Pacific Studies normally taken<br />

by third and fourth year (Honours) students.<br />

■ HUB646 INTERNATIONAL INTENSIVE<br />

PROGRAM<br />

Short period of intensive language study conducted at an approved<br />

institution in the country where the target language is<br />

used; aims to enhance language skills and introduce students<br />

to the culture of the country in an immersion situation.<br />

Courses: BS50, ED50, HU20<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 3 per week<br />

■ HUB647 INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL<br />

OR EQUIVALENT<br />

This unit is held in residence at a designated foreign university<br />

for four to six weeks of concentrated learning; aims to<br />

enhance student’s proficiency in the four macro skills; increases<br />

student’s understanding of the cultural context in which<br />

the target language is used.<br />

Courses: BS50, ED50, HU20 Credit Points: 24<br />

■ HUB648 INTERNATIONAL SEMESTER OR<br />

EQUIVALENT<br />

Students follow an approved course of study at a designated<br />

foreign university for a semester. The unit aims to improve<br />

language skills in an immersion situation and at the same time<br />

provide the cultural experience of living in the country of the<br />

language being studied for an extended period of time.<br />

■ HUB649 HISTORY WRITING IN MODERN<br />

EUROPE<br />

An advanced seminar in European Studies normally taken by<br />

third and fourth years (Honours) students.<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 3 per week<br />

■ HUB650 INDONESIAN 1<br />

This unit assumes no prior knowledge of Indonesian, and aims<br />

to equip beginning students with elementary communicative<br />

competence in a range of common everyday situations.<br />

Courses: HU20, IF36, IF70, BS56, ED50, ED51, SC30<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB651 INDONESIAN 2<br />

This unit expands beginners’ repertoire of communicative<br />

competence into a wider range of situations. Relatively more<br />

emphasis upon speaking and listening rather than reading and<br />

writing.<br />

Prerequisites: HUB650 or equivalent<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB652 INDONESIAN 3<br />

This unit advances learners’ competence to intermediate level,<br />

with some analytical focus on syntactic and morphological<br />

structues in Indonesian.<br />

Prerequisites: HUB651 or equivalent<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB653 INDONESIAN 4<br />

This unit continues to develop fluency in all macroskills to an<br />

intermediate level, with increased use of authentic source<br />

materials.<br />

Prerequisites: HUB652 or equivalent<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB654 INDONESIAN 5<br />

This unit continues to develop proficiency in all macroskills,<br />

using mainly authentic texts (written, audio and audio-visual).<br />

Courses: HU20, IF36, IF70, BS56, ED50, ED51, SC30<br />

Prerequisites: HUB653 or equivalent<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB655 INDONESIAN 6<br />

The unit extends learners’ proficiency, with almost exclusive<br />

use of authentic texts.<br />

Prerequisites: HUB654 or equivalent<br />

Credit Points: 12 Contact Hours: 4 per week<br />

■ HUB656 INDONESIAN 7<br />

This unit enhances learners’ linguistic skills to a level where<br />

they can read modern Indonesian sources, understand television<br />

programs, as well as discuss and write intelligently about<br />
