psychology in patriarchal discourse; family therapy theory and<br />

skills. Skills are applied and analysed outside the class.<br />

Sexuality; model strategies for dealing appropriately with sensitive,<br />

of social concern such as sexual abuse of children.<br />

Students critically evaluate statements about behaviour; state<br />

and give examples of higher order motives and apply this<br />

how to minimise misperception; use of effective social skills<br />

in interpersonal and group settings; understand theories of<br />

attitude, change and know implications of changing the behaviour<br />

of others; use skills necessary for starting a successful<br />

PROFESSIONALS<br />

An examination of sociology’s origins, theories, perspectives<br />

and methodologies with reference to health and wellness, illness<br />

and premature mortality; empirical data on mortality and<br />

morbidity in contemporary Australia are presented and subjected<br />

to sociological analyses to indicate social patterns, processes<br />

promoting or constraining levels of health.<br />

■ SSB904 SOCIOLOGY OF HEALTH & ILLNESS<br />

This unit analyses in detail the statement that: ‘The major determinants<br />

of health and illness are social, cultural, behavioural,<br />

occupational, regional, environmental and parental.’ Indigenous,<br />

migrant and rural health determinants in Australia are investigated.<br />

The importance of a social and cultural approach to environmental<br />

health issues is highlighted.<br />

PROFESSIONALS<br />

Presents particular aspects of the theories, skills and approaches<br />

of interpersonal, social and organisational psychology<br />

which are relevant to nursing practice. Topics include:<br />

humanistic, cognitive, behavioural and social models for understanding<br />

the individual; communication processes; selfconcept<br />

and self-esteem; protection of the ego; the impact of<br />

emotions and beliefs on health behaviour; and interpersonal<br />

communication skills.<br />

■ SSB906 SOCIOLOGY FOR HEALTH<br />

PROFESSIONALS<br />

Sociological theories and methods are studied to identify and<br />

analyse social relationships, social processes and social patterns<br />

relating to the social origins of illness and wellness;<br />

analysis trends in morbidity and mortality in society which<br />

are not randomly distributed but associated with social structural<br />

variables such as ethnicity, gender, social class, age and<br />

geographical location; examines the health care system internally<br />

and in relation to its public use and its effectiveness in<br />

addressing contemporary health issues in Australia.<br />

An introduction to perception, motivation, individual personality,<br />

social attitudes, group interaction and dynamics; social<br />

application and limitations of behavioural studies; readings<br />

and case studies drawn from the building industry; the<br />

job and responsibilities of management; the functions and role<br />

of the manager including planning, organisation, control, budgeting<br />

and decision-making; styles of leadership; employee<br />

selection training, appraising and promotion; worker efficiency<br />

and working conditions.<br />
