and controversial issues explored. Fiscal constraints and administrative<br />

dilemmas according to international trends are<br />

■ JSP081 LAW & PUBLIC POLICY<br />

This unit introduces students to the practice of public policy<br />

formulation and development with specific emphasis on the<br />

legislative and legal implications of policy work. The unit<br />

adopts a community-based approach to the policy process as<br />

the vehicle for learning the micro-skills of policy consultation,<br />

analysis and writing.<br />

■ JSP082 LEGAL RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Society demands certain responsibilities from persons classed<br />

as adult. Rights and duties fall to the adult person in some of<br />

the most important aspects in the accepted lifestyle in our society<br />

in terms of housing, relationships and employment. These<br />

responsibilities will encompass the majority of adult life. A<br />

reasoned analysis of the legal responsibilities involved in housing,<br />

marriage and employment is essential.<br />

■ JSP083 ADMINISTRATIVE LAW & JUSTICE<br />

Mechanisms of state accountability, their practice and philosophy<br />

are examined in order to give justice professionals a<br />

working knowledge of their operation. Open government, fair<br />

decision-making and administrative justice are key concerns<br />

within this field. Merits review, judicial review, freedom of<br />

information and the ombuds office are all critiqued and their<br />

procedures considered in light of a greater framework of social<br />

justice.<br />

■ JSP084 JUSTICE & HUMAN RIGHTS<br />

The political and philosophical constructions known as rights<br />

are becoming increasingly important in the Australian justice<br />

professions. Both international and domestic documents are<br />

analysed in order to develop a cohesive framework of rights<br />

in the justice domain. Policy considerations are explored and<br />

much of the other material covered in the minor is tied together<br />

in the context of human rights policy research.<br />

■ LAB320 STUDIES IN LANGUAGE<br />

The language basis in current approaches to the teaching of<br />

English; nature and function of language; dynamics involved<br />

in interactive situations; appropriateness of language forms<br />

used in various social contexts; educational implications of<br />

linguistic diversity within the community; recognition of the<br />

developmental features of adolescent language.<br />

■ LAB321 WRITING WORKSHOP<br />

The student, as writer, uses all the language modes in social<br />

contexts (either genuine or simulated) to lead to writing in a<br />

range of situations. Engagement in these writing situations is<br />

designed to bring about personal understanding of the following:<br />

the nature of the writing process; the influence of<br />

audience and purpose on the final written product; the range<br />

of genres (or forms) falling within the writing activity.<br />

■ LAB322 LITERATURE IN TEACHING<br />

Literature teaching in historical perspective; recent developments<br />

in theory; poetry in the senior school; teaching drama<br />

shorter works (novellas, short stories) and their use in the<br />

English curriculum.<br />

The scope and nature of young adult literature; strategies for<br />

evaluation and selection; recent research into adolescents’ reading<br />

in the curriculum.<br />
