Supervised design and initial development of Honours dissertation<br />

Supervised research and writing of the Honours dissertation,<br />

Weekly discussion and presentations relating to research and<br />

Supervised experience in a working environment related to<br />

■ HUB906 OVERSEAS STUDY<br />

An approved course of study for language students in an overseas<br />

teritiary institution offering instruction in the target language.<br />

■ HUB954 INDEPENDENT STUDY UNIT<br />

This unit enables 3rd year students to engage in a small-scale<br />

research project which is related to, but not covered by, existing<br />

undergraduate Humanities units. A student wishing to<br />

complete an independent studies unit is required to identify a<br />

topic/problem, enlist the support of an academic staff member<br />

to act as a supervisor and seek the endorsement of the<br />

Undergraduate Studies Coordinator before her/his proposed<br />

study will be accepted.<br />

Exploration of conceptual and theoretical issues; practical<br />

■ HUP006 ETHICS & PUBLIC POLICY<br />

This unit considers the ways in which values, ethics and political<br />

principles are relevant to the formulation of public<br />

policy. The unit focuses on several different approaches to<br />

the ethical evaluation of public policy; utilitarianism, rights<br />

theory, libertal neutrality and community values. The unit<br />

also considers the relation between ethics, efficiency and the<br />

market, and justifications for state intervention. In addition<br />

to examining different theories of ethics and public policy,<br />

this unit will also consider the morality of specific public<br />

policies, including drug policy, state support of the arts and<br />

economic policy.<br />

Students undertake a project requiring research, investigation<br />

or design of some topic or problem of interest to the profession.<br />

■ IFN001 ADVANCED INFORMATION RETRIEVAL<br />

SKILLS<br />

This unit provides postgraduate research students with the<br />

skills to implement a thorough literature search in their research<br />

area and to set up a personal system for managing the<br />

references collected. The seven modules which form this unit<br />

include developing a search strategy; using the <strong>QUT</strong> libraries;<br />

indexing and abstract services; the Internet and its uses;<br />

developing a current awareness strategy; thesis writing; personal<br />

file management; evaluating information.<br />

■ IFN100 FULL-TIME MASTERS’ RESEARCH<br />

This unit provides full-time postgraduate research students<br />

with study in a relevant area leading to the development of a<br />

thesis of not less than 50 000 words. Relevant areas include<br />

criminology, law enforcement, intelligence and security, corrections<br />

and legal and justice policy.<br />
