Introductory principles, practices, philosophies and theories<br />

in the visual and performing arts as they relate to young children<br />

in various EC contexts; the arts as a way of knowing and<br />

expressing; creativity versus artistry; overview of artistic development<br />

from birth to adolescence; the arts, culture, education<br />

and the young child; elements and concepts in the visual<br />

arts, music, drama, movement and dance with specific emphasis<br />

on the visual arts; the development of the visual arts<br />

for children in EC settings; assisting artistry with children<br />

under five years of age and with school-aged children.<br />

CURRICULUM: ARTS<br />

Application of principles, practices, philosophies and theories<br />

in the areas of music, drama, movement and dance, with<br />

specific emphasis on how these arts provide unique opportunities<br />

for knowing and understanding; assisting children’s<br />

development through music, dance and drama in preschool<br />

and primary school EC settings; integration of the arts in relation<br />

to unique and shared elements and concepts across various<br />

domains; advocacy in the arts.<br />

■ EAB350 ADVANCED EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

CURRICULUM: LITERACY & NUMERACY IN<br />

THE EARLY YEARS<br />

Observation, assessment and diagnosis of the literacy and<br />

numeracy abilities of young children in ECE settings; planning,<br />

implementing and evaluating programs to foster optimal<br />

development in literacy and numeracy; addressing literacy<br />

and numeracy needs of all children equitably and justly; critical<br />

examination of teaching approaches and resources in literacy<br />

and numeracy education.<br />

■ EAB351 FAMILY STUDIES & EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD EDUCATION<br />

Current social contexts and issues affecting families with<br />

young children, including employment patterns, unemployment,<br />

poverty, inequality and social justice, ideology of family,<br />

cultural diversity, particularly from the perspectives of<br />

Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, and the influence of<br />

technology; reciprocal social and family influences.<br />

■ EAB410 EARLY EDUCATION: DECIDING THE<br />

CURRICULUM<br />

Examination of the curriculum decision-making processes<br />

promoted and in use among teachers working in early childhood<br />

settings such as kindergartens, child care and schools.<br />

Students have an opportunity to reflect on, and seek to improve,<br />

personal ability to decide the curriculum for young<br />

learners.<br />

■ EAB411 EARLY EDUCATION: LITERACY<br />

A study of current understandings about the nature of literacy,<br />

literacy development in early childhood and the ways in which<br />

this development can be fostered both within the home and at<br />

a range of educational and care settings. The broad topic areas<br />

addressed comprise language foundations, processes and<br />

patterns of development, the classroom context and program<br />

development. Students are expected to build on their preservice<br />

studies in the area of language and literacy development and<br />

learning.<br />

■ EAB412 INTEGRATIVE EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

CURRICULUM<br />

Examination of key ideas informing holistic curriculum approaches;<br />

theories and practices associated with play in the<br />

curriculum in all EC settings, and particularly the lower primary<br />

school; implications of implementing an inclusive curriculum;<br />

issues of equity and social justice reviewed in relation<br />

to the transacting the curriculum in EC settings; critical<br />

analysis of approaches to designing curriculum for the expanding<br />

range of services for young children and families in<br />

Australia.<br />

■ EAB413 MANAGEMENT OF EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD SERVICES<br />

General management theory and practice; organisational and<br />

leadership styles; management of various EC services; setting<br />

policies and planning for services; implementing day-today<br />

tasks and operations; managing and working with people;<br />

collective and collaborative approaches to management;<br />

teamwork and decision-making; ethical issues and conduct;<br />

advocacy of EC services for young children from all cultural<br />

and social contexts.<br />

■ EAB414 RESEARCH IN EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATION<br />

Research design and methodology; qualitative and quantitative<br />

research; ethical issues in the conduct of the research process<br />

with young children and the adults involved with them;<br />

awareness and understanding of the research process from<br />

development of proposal, through conduct of some aspects of<br />

data collection and analysis to writing parts of the thesis. Introduction<br />

to and involvement in processes of self-evaluation.<br />

Students will be involved with a practising researcher who<br />

will act as mentor.<br />

■ EAB415 RESOURCE/SUPPORT PROGRAMS IN<br />

EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

Community programs which support children and families<br />

outside the mainstream EC settings; visits to programs such<br />

as those for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as<br />

for children and families of other cultures; awareness of effects<br />

of cultural diversity, geographical isolation, etc.; establishing<br />

resource files for teaching and referral; models of par-<br />
