ENVIRONMENT<br />

This unit provides a broad overview of management and business<br />

in national and global contexts. The focus will be on both<br />

profit and not-for-profit organisations. It provides the key foundation<br />

for subsequent units in the program. The unit acquaints<br />

students with the role of the manager and the main concepts,<br />

principles and techniques of management. In addition to a general<br />

introduction to management, students will explore the nature<br />

of business: functions, structures and processes.<br />

■ GSN205 MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES<br />

This unit recognises the importance of the management of<br />

human resources for organisational effectiveness and quality<br />

of work life. It emphasises the relationship between the management<br />

of human resources and the business enterprise at a<br />

strategic level. Perspectives brought to bear in this examination<br />

include strategic, functional and multiple constituency<br />

models. Topics include: workforce planning, job analysis,<br />

staffing, employer/employee relations, enterprise bargaining,<br />

training and development, equity issues, remuneration and<br />

career management.<br />

■ GSN206 MARKETING<br />

This unit examines the role of marketing and its place within<br />

the firm. It examines key marketing decision areas, including<br />

the marketing concept, marketing research, consumer behaviour,<br />

marketing segmentation and positioning, product policy,<br />

pricing, promotion and distribution. It further examines the<br />

place of marketing within the strategic processes of the modern<br />

firm and the complexities brought about by an increasingly<br />

complex international environment.<br />

■ GSN207 ORGANISATIONAL ANALYSIS &<br />

CONSULTING<br />

The ability to analyse organisations and organisational functioning<br />

is critical to management effectiveness. It is important<br />

to be able to gather data about an organisation and its<br />

performance in order to better understand it and, where needed,<br />

to recommend and guide the implementation of change. Various<br />

theoretical models of organisation and organisational<br />

analysis, including action research models, are explored. This<br />

unit helps students to understand the role of the ‘change agent’<br />

and equips them to perform the role of internal and/or external<br />

consultant from initial contact with the client/organisation<br />

through to completion, including proposal and report<br />

writing. This unit is compulsory for students undertaking industry<br />

placement.<br />

■ GSN208 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & ETHICS<br />

FOR MANAGERS<br />

The focus of this unit is on the individual in interaction.<br />

Through it, individuals will identify and develop the competencies,<br />

interpersonal and intercultural, required to be an<br />

effective global manager. The competencies occur in both<br />

cognitive and affective domains at personal, interpersonal<br />

and professional levels. The unit also examines influence<br />

processes, personal behaviour and ethics, career management<br />

issues and reflective practice. Individuals will develop a sophisticated<br />

understanding of their personal style of interaction,<br />

allowing them to foster a healthy environment and alleviate<br />

dysfunctional processes.<br />

■ GSN211 DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS<br />

Timely and accurate information is a management resource,<br />

and computers can process much of this information to augment<br />

and extend a manager’s capacity. The unit provides an<br />

understanding of the importance, variety and value of both<br />

quantitative and qualitative decision support systems, including<br />

a significant emphasis on computer-based information<br />

systems such as databases and expert systems from the point<br />

of view of systems users rather than of specialist system<br />

analysis.<br />

Addresses qualitative methodologies and methods pertinent<br />

■ HLN700 THESIS<br />

The thesis provides students with an opportunity to formally<br />

piece of research completed under the guidance of a supervisor.<br />

■ HLN701 LITERATURE REVIEW<br />

This unit provides students with an opportunity to identify a<br />

relevant area for further investigation and to undertake a detailed<br />

literature review. Student’s gain skills in gathering and<br />

analysing up-to-date research literature and synthesising information<br />

into a logical and coherent format.<br />

■ HLN702 RESEARCH PROJECT<br />

An independent and original piece of research completed with<br />

the guidance of a supervisor. The project may be a report on<br />

research which makes a contribution to knowledge, or a study<br />

in which the student critically analyses and appraises existing<br />

knowledge and produces observiations and conclusion of value<br />

to the field concerned.<br />
