presentation of a design project.<br />

An introduction to a variety of analytical tools for reading<br />

and evaluating different types of texts. Texts are here taken to<br />

incorporate any constructed meanings and messages which<br />

are capable of being interpreted. A wide range of cultural products<br />

selected from a cross-section of contexts, genres and<br />

media are examined closely. Students are introduced to major<br />

theoretical issues and concerns underlying contemporary developments<br />

in the fields of cultural analysis and textual interpretation.<br />

Students enrolled part-time or full-time in AT22 Master of<br />

Arts (Research) undertake a research project as the major component<br />

of their studies. This project may take the form of a<br />

research thesis or a creative project accompanied by a written<br />

component. The creative project could include a book-length<br />

work of fiction or non-fiction; or a film or multi-media script<br />

or production. Units may be either taken one per semester or<br />

several per semester, depending on the enrolment pattern recommended<br />

by the School in the Course Summary Sheet, in<br />

accordance with the desired length of candidature, mode (fullor<br />

part-time), and entry qualifications (three or four year qualified).<br />

■ ATN009 ARTS RESEARCH METHODS<br />

The goal of this unit is to give students an overview and understanding<br />

of the variety of methods used in research. It provides<br />

students with knowledge in the participating areas. It<br />

also will give students practical and conceptual understanding<br />

of the conduct of a literature review and its application in<br />

the development of a research area; and experience in developing<br />

the components of the research process and applying<br />

them to their thesis or to an issue of personal interest.<br />

Weekly discussions and presentations related to the research<br />

Australian legal and constitutional system; sources of law,<br />

including doctrines and methodology of the law; statutory<br />

interpretation; a study of the law of contract; introduction to<br />

the law of torts with emphasis on the tort of negligence; aspects<br />

of consumer protection.<br />

An examination of the accounting concepts and procedures<br />

relevant to both partnership and company business structures<br />

within the context of: the accounting profession’s conceptual<br />

framework; the relevant accounting standard and legal requirements;<br />

and the nature of professional and social practice. Topics<br />

include: the formation, accounting procedures and financial<br />

statement preparation for both Partnerships and Company<br />

Business Structures; an overview of the new Corporate Law<br />

Simplification Programme requirements in relation to financial<br />

accounting; reporting and disclosure; a review of cash<br />

flow statements; and Accountants and Accounting Practice –<br />

an ethical perspective.<br />

and general ledger systems; accounting software such as<br />

ACCPAC, and spreadsheet software such as LOTUS 1-2-3;<br />
